Removing resonator from exhaust.

The story goes, my resonator died the other night.. or I noticed it the other night. It was rusted out. I had it checked out the next day, and instead of putting another resonator on, they simply put a pipe running from the middle muffler with my original twin tip. I really dont know much about exhaust systems on the AU.

My questions are..

1. Should removing the resonator enhance the sound from the exhaust, as it is noticibly louder?

2. And should there be any benifits from removing? Slight increase in power, fuel economy, etc.

My car specs - AU1 99 Forte Auto, i6 4.0l.. standard exhaust. The only mod is a Pod Filter inside the air box with a Tickford Snorkel.

Just a couple of stupid questions really.

1. Yes. Resonator is a type of muffler, so of course removing it will increase noise.
2. Unlikely, though I guess any muffler is a restriction, so you may have gained 1rwkw or so.

i done this with my ef, it will have a deeper note with a bit more of a grunt sound, a little bit louder not much

as for peformance or fuel, no difference

Pretty much how it sounds.

Bad idea. They are called resonators for a reason - they stop resonance. Resonance is the nasty droning sound you hear at certain revs with badly designed exhaust systems.

If you want more noise without resonance, a better bet is to remove the middle muffler and replace it with either a straight through pipe or a hot dog, but leave the resonator in place. Yours is stuffed, so get a new one.

for the best sound i rekon put a hot dog, when i done this it had a bit less drone at constant high rpms and its also gives a deeper note

I had a straight through sports muffler installed, then got my front resonator cut out, then finally the back removed. It does drone a little bit but i love the sound, best bet is remove all, have sports muffler and small resonator at the back to knock out a bit of drone. In a standard system, removing the front or the back by themselves will make SFA difference, will give slight better sound, but you wont get the droning due to the main muffler. In a sports exahust yes, rear resonator is better to keep, but in standard dont worry about it, they have given you a slightly better note, saved you money and it will be fine as is.

I just took my car in, said what was wrong, they looked at it and they said they had all the parts already in stock and they could do it now.
