Default Buying 2nd Car (weekend warrior)

Hi,

wanted to get some opinions and advice here.


Current daily driver 2000 Toyota Camry 2.2L 4cylinder.

I've been looking for well over a year now for something for a weekend cruizer, had many different thoughts on what to get from Holden LJ/LC Torana, ZA-ZH Ford fairlanes and chevy impalas. :

I'm currently living at home, working full time and was wondering if it would be to hard to own 2 cars? (only 19 y/o)

Or would it be better to get something that can double like a modified XR6 Turbo

If it were me, I'd get something that was a classic. But don't forget about the price of insurance. Being 19, it must cost a bit.

2 cars isn't worth it IMO if it's just the one person, but then again my outlook on cars has changed something chronic the last few weeks!

Get rid of the Camry.

Buy something good. Like an XR6 Turbo.

Well you around my age so i know how much you will be up for with insurance...

Your better off getting yourself into a nice Dailey driver, a AU, BA or BF XR, all great cars, a weekend Warrior is a great idea, but to much of a finacial strain paying two rego's, insuranceis probably about double or triple what you pay on the camry for the weekend car...

An NA XR6 would be nice. Not too bad on fuel and insurance either.

Full comp insurance with NRMA $900 (Maximum no claim bonus on family account)

I got quoted the following for a 1978 Ford 'ZH' Fairlane 5.8L

Excess $1600
Third party - $250 (no claim bonus doesnt apply on third party)
Full Comp - $350

Excess $900
Third party $600 (no claim bonus doesnt apply on third party)
Full Comp $700

To repeat, get rid of the Camry. A 4 litre car as boring as the Camry would not be as much fun as a Falcon or Commodore.

At 19, getting a BA would be a bloody good effort! Not many 19 year olds get BAs from their own pocket. A lot of people I know drive their parent's car (bums like me) or they drive old junkheaps that barely run. BTW, many of my friends are 21-22. So at 19, getting an XR6 or something like that would be a great effort, and you'll certainly enjoy it a lot more than the Camry!

I am surprised you haven't turned to stone yet!

And Steffo...he's 19 y/o. Don't think he can drive a Turbo. Well, not in Victoria anyway.

Depends on how much, where, and when you drive. Classics can be great fun to drive but if you drive large distances and spend time in heavy traffic your gonna need a very good one. Its the little things you will notice like not having a rear dimister, or inefficient wipers etc, assuming it is in good mechanical order.

I only have a BA now at 28 and I am struggling to afford that. At 19 I had an XA coupe that leaked water in the rear window (which didnt have a demister), a 302 that burned almost as much oil at petrol, instruments that didnt work properly etc. But then after that I had a 6cyl XC which I drove to the city (70km 1 way) every day and that was fine so its all up to what sort of comforts you want.

I went the weekender route and it works well, I've got a blown BA for Sundays and an AU for through the week. I'm 25 now but I had a reasonably quick XD for the weekends when I was younger. Trying to do two things with one car can end up costing you more, but it all depends on what you want out of it.

To be honest it wouldn't be a top 10 summernats house of kolours painted show winning tralor pony so you reakon it would be ok to park it out the back and put a cover over it?

Its hard to comprimise hehe :P I'm so keen for a big cruizer car. like when i see a nice XR6-T or XR8 like you turn your head once. But with those big limo looking cruizers mane.... i nearly crashed the other night seeing one drive in panthers...when u see one driving along you are like "that is the definition of cool" :

i just think one day i can drive to one of the local car hang out spots where they have their honda's with 5" fart cans, Toyoko drift seat covers, green neon lights and more stickers on their car then a childs playbook and be the envy of all the bitches in a super clean SS Impala

Man it's a killer already for on-road costs for a young person <20...

Im 18 now, I got enough to buy a EL XR6 as my first car this year when I find one with manual and in good cond.

My opinion is that it will cost wayy to much to run 2 cars. Maybe just save up for a year or two for a better daily driver _2:

If you can afford it then do it. It means that the weekend car can be a gruntier fun car that doesn’t get knocked around by the day to day stuff.

If you do go to an LC-LJ Torana be prepared to step back a bit with dynamics (depending on it’s mods). I used to sprint one years ago and wound up working twice as hard to go half as slow as some of the newer cars. Wheelspin in the wet on the narrow cheesecutter tyres at 100kmh anyone?

The next car after the Torrie was a 90’s car and the step up in 15 years of design/handling (and less abused components) was immense.

I can offer you some advice on this one mate...
I am 22, so am young as well.
currently I drive a Ba Fairmont Ghia, but am tossing up between an xr6t or F6 Tornado ute to replace the ghia with.
I also own an XB Fairmont that is waiting to be resotored, but i am having second thoughts about it, sounded like a great idea at the time you know... have a car to stuff around it during the week, and a weekend cruiser ( XB ).
I am starting to spend too mcuh money on the XB, and i can only see me pouring another 10 K into it EASY to get it to where i want it, so i have put her on the back burner for a bit until i sort out the new car sittuation.
So in finishing... ... I would say, forget the weekend car, grab a turbo, or a V8 BA ghia and mod it like mine, and have the best of both worlds, a comfortable crusier, that can kick butts when you push the go pedal.
Insurance is cheap opn the V8 Ghia and F6.. but the XR6T is a joke!

I thought it would be more on those cars, but it prolly depends on the statistics on the insurance companys system eh.

Buy yourself a ZG fairlane. If you have any doubts about the sheer awesomeness of that idea (which is like being hit by the awesome bus), then get a P5 LTD.

This is a fair point regardless of the posters original last line, he's asking for advise and I would class this as 'very good' advise!

I think it’s a great idea, the camry does the daily commuter work and meanwhile parked in the drive is something a bit different to brighten up your weekend. You might consider anything from the 70 in a large format. Either Statesman or Fairlane both are cheap and offer reasonable comfort parts are cheap and they look the goods lowered with a nice set of wheels. Personally I have always liked the WB stato’s. Shaved of all the trim and lowered they look very cool. 3rd party property insurance is all you would need on something from that era. Go for it……. :
