MK3 out October in time for Sydney Motor show, all-new model probably late 07 would be my guess.

Man it makes me cringe sometimes when ya read whats in the next upgrade when you're waiting for your brand new xr mkII you just bought. : This is always going to happen though so this can't be avoided.
What would be the main advantage having a 6 speed as opposed to a 4 speed auto? Fuel economy? Utilise the engine power more efficiently? And if the 6spd auto does cost alot more, will there be a price increase in the mkIII? |

I don't think there will be a V10-powered Ford or Holden ever...
And I just can't wait for the 6-speed auto... more reasons to be lazy and buy a bloody auto!!! |

Mercedes used this gearbox in the E-class and stated a 7% increase in economy over their already good 5spd. Up to 15% improvement would have to be on the cards going from current auto around town. And probably up to 10% highway. This will be great for the Territory too!!! They will act quick on this one. The gearbox weighs 10kg less than the current model. Acceleration could be drastically ehanced due to the gear ratios. First could reach 50kmh versus 84kmh now @6000rpm. Gear ZF6spd BTR4spd 1st: 4.17 2.50 2nd: 2.34 1.49 3rd: 1.52 1.00 4th: 1.14 0.68 5th: 0.87 6th: 0.69 A huge advantage is the strength and durability of the gearbox. From memory I believe it can take 700Nm and 7000rpm. Thats 510kW capability. Yeeha! Personally i reckon the 5.4 Boss is a good motor. But, it involves weight and dynamic compromises. I believe the 4.6 DOHC would be a much better outcome. The slightly lesser torque compared with its big brother is less an issue with 6spds!! Supercharge it for FPV models if need be. I also hope the next Falcon (due mid 2007) is reduced in size/length a little. Maybe 150mm shorter. And goes to the fitness factory to lose the excess kilos. Give it alloy blocks, suspension and more hydroformed panels. Become a leader in this regard. I want to see the weight back under 1550kg for XT. |
