Maybe a silly question, its not my car after all. But a colleague who's AU is possibly a Series 1, has 105,000km on the clock, and wont select reverse or park. Told him to turn on just ignition and listen for solenoids, will see how it went tomorrow. But presently it is remaining in nuetral despite the shift lever feeling good.
He's got this bad whining noise when turning - was dreading the outlay of suspension/steering work - I reckon if he checks the power steering fluid and tops it up that'll be fine from his description!!! But is the trans likely to be same deal, just low on maintenance and hydraulic fluid? Or may it be a controller module issue - keeping in mind it apparently has no problem in forward gears.

Reverse is always the first gear to go on the auto tranny, but the only time Ive heard of park dissapearing is when a mate of a mate (a pretty stupid one) decided to throw his car into park at speed thinking he was gonna pull some kind of handbrakey (without the handbrake - bit of a tool!),! maybe the sticks not in the position he thinks it in - maybe the console has moved backwards slightly preventing it from moving all the way into P and Leaving R on the borderline of N??? not sure, I drive a manual!
but as for the steering noise, Id bet my life on it being low fluid (probably empty). but remember, if its low, its probably leaking somewhere so topping it up is just the temporary fix.

My xr8 was having trouble selecting gears. it was the tranny fluid but that was all gears not just park and reverse. I havnt heard of this happening before. It could be as simple as what robbo said above or it could be the selectors on the gearbox have moved a little! If you find out what it is could you post it up id like to know incase it happens to my car.

If it's not getting park, which is controlled only by a manual linkage, not by fluid, AFAIK, then the adjusting nut under the shifter assembly (underneath the car) needs to be adjusted properly. Not getting reverse is a sign of low fluid, or old/burnt fluid.

That's what he's worried about.
Apparently, power steering was just above the "cold" level, when hot. So not that low. Topped it up - noise still the same... Trans I thought switches too, but drive, etc. aren't an issue - not sure if Park was a wierd one and reverse was regular, or if both have problems. I'll mention the adjustments - likely they've never been looked at. I did question "roll-backs", but he's adament he only gives it a hard time in drive, never rolling from R to D outside of a carpark. Thanks guys - the saga continues.

My FORD dealer advised me to get a complete auto service ($170) at 100.000kms then every 60.000kms. car has done 130.000kms no problems.
Is the V8 box different to the 6 box ? |
