IN the the back mate

There was another life lost in WA last night which is sad as it was a 17 year old coming back into Merredin (300kms east of Perth) in the back of his mate's ute and the drive lost it on the drit road ,rolled the ute and the guy in the back was thrown out the back . Now there is alot of us that have utes so I hope none of us are doing this .

What a waste of a life...makes you wonder what the driver was thinking and also what the hell he was doing to have lost control,without thinking of his MATE in the back.

Very silly indeed.
However, I would like to point out about riding in the back of utes was once the "norm" I know as a kid I did it when my father would bring one home from work, heck even on the opening of Sesame Street Maria and some kids would be in the back of a moving ute. I guess once upon a time it was not considerewd dangerous.

damn, poor guys. I rode back from the pub in the back of an HQ on dirt roads once. I guess that's the luck side of it. Never again.

It may be harsh, but idiots will never get any sympathy from me.
Why a kid was riding in the back of a ute while it was moving is beyond me.
Thats just asking for trouble.

It's the Aussie attitude. "She'll be right mate". "It won't happen to me" We all know what can happen. It doesn't take an einstein to know that no seat belt in an accident can be the difference between living and dying. We all know the consequences but we continue to push our luck. Its like those idiot parents that smoke with children in the car, or leave the kids in the car on a hot summers day. Use some commonsense. It might actually save your life.

that shits me seeing poeple smoke in cars with their kids in with them and as a person who some times smoke (when I drink ) I can't see how they can do it in a small area like a car to start with .

When I was younger, one of my mates was killed by riding in the back of his granddads ute. Hit a bump, he fell out, and was run over.

Not only that, but you have the parents that take their children to the club for the whole day, (smokie environment) feed them chips and coke to keep em quite, while the parents sit there getting drunk. Sad.

Regarding riding in the back of a ute, I have no problem with that provided that:
A) A safe route is planned to be driven along.
B) The driver isn't a Takumi Fujiwara wannabe (Itsuki?

: ), and you know for sure he/she's planning on being much more cautious considering they're carrying a "live load". So I'd only do it if I knew the driver really well.

Since the driver lost it & rolled, that implies that he wasn't driving safely in the first place! It'd be bad enough to be in the passenger seat, let alone the tray!

thing is in the outback its an everyday thing. like most activities that involve risk, the more you do it the chances of coming unstuck are greater. feel sorry for their families though

Last time I checked, it was LEGAL to ride in the back of a ute in Victoria!!!! The one provision was that you must wear seatbelts if they are provided - when was the last time you saw a ute with seatbelts in the back?

For the record when I was a young lad riding in the back of my mate's ute was the norm. It looked cool but boy was it uncomfortable - only slightly less painful than riding in the back of a Divvy-van, (don't ask).

Now days, I will not even consider travelling with ANY living creature in the back of the ute - much to the dissapointment of my 13 year old son.

Its illegal in west aust unless you have a roll bar fitted ?
How will that save someone in the back ? This ute that flipped may have had a roll bar and been legal, but it wouldnt have helped the guy in the back.
