without reading the whole thread, i think this is a bloody good idea for those repeat offenders caught doing skids/street racing and so on. And if they still manage to get done, scrap the car.

DH's just need to learn to drive properly, (including the way they drive on the open road around trucks and other vehicles in general),

the government needs to spend more money on improving road condition around the country instead of blowing millions on satellite technology,

if they want to do something creative, put some legislation on the use of caravans on the road like curfews and size limits for dumb a*** grey haired nomads that cause frustration and road rage by driving at 20 - 30 kms BELOW the speed limit.. and tow 26foot vans out on the highways when they can barely navigate in and out of a supermarket!

there needs to be more policing of things such as those annoying idiots that sit below the speed limit when you cannot safely overtake and when the road opens up they decide that they can s*** you a bit more by doing 10 - 20 above the limit which then makes the frustrated driver following take more un necessary risks...

this is the that makes the road toll higher, and the sooner our crappy government pulls their heads out to realise this.. maybe the roads will be safer..

ONCE AGAIN HUMAN COMMON SENSE IS THROWN AWAY AND THE AVERAGE AUSSIE GIVES BIRTH TO A FRESH PINEAPPLE!!

Whoever invented this system & to the Transport minister
or Govt that approve this should be shot in the head.

This is pure stupidity and will cause more accidents and not stop it.

Queensland Transport vehicle safety consultant Michael Paine said the system
could INCREASE the number of serious accidents by 20 per cent.

The Herald Sun quoted an unnamed Victorian government website, which
estimated the number of fatalities could be INCREASE by almost 60 per cent
if it was fitted to all cars.

And so will there be a similar poo fight over the proposed camera logging on the M7 mentioned in another post?

(Actually I'm not sure I believe this, at least the camera bit - all they need to do is record the times your toll chip was recorded at the relevant points)

You get up in the morning, hop in the car cocooned from the worries of the world. You travel along the motorway safe in the knowledge a computer located somewhere in the city will cut your speed should you transgress. You pass through an E-Toll that logs your movement, debits your account and you safely make it to the work carpark, where you present your access card that logs your entry. You make it to the office and turn on the PC and the kernal embedded software of the Vista operating system sends Microsoft and Fox Studios your activity log. A few phone calls during the day, emails and web browsing are logged on the business server for review by the menopausal human relations woman with a bullshit degree and it's a normal day.

On the way home you get a clear run for about 500 metres on the rain soaked motorway. An articulated cattle truck in front is throwing up a spray of blinding surface water and urine, so you jump in the next lane to overtake. The speedo registers 110 kph, the engine cuts, your eyes are fixed on the instrument cluster as it lights up like a xmas tree, you look up to find you are driving blind because the intermittent wipers are not coping with the wash from the truck wheels now perilously close to your bonnet as you decelerate. The car in front of you has suffered a similar fate and is compression braking rapidly without any brake warning lights, you try to hit the skids to avoid hitting him, but there is no booster. You fumble for the ignition key, but turn it the wrong way in panic, the steering wheel locks.

While you are laying in the triage room, you wonder if you really deserved to be a jobless invalid for the rest of your life, for merely travelling at 10 kph above the speed limit on a dual carriageway seperated from oncoming traffic by a median strip and crash barrier. At least you weren't killed and the stat sheets will show the AISI saved your life. Everyone is satisfied the outcome would have been worse without interevention. The case of the Winnebago driver who successfully sued because the cruise control didn't take over driving duities while making a cup of coffee in the back flashes through your mind, but you remember this is Australia, with nanny governments who just want a well oiled, beige and ordered society. The attending police have been saved the unpallatable site of a corpse and one actually saved your life by tournequeting your severed arm and splinting your shattered femur; he'll be along in a few days to have some hero pictures taken with you in bed and to hand you a summons to appear on dangerous driving charges.

Too much time wondering if the "sky is falling" (famous Chicken Little quote) I think Wally, but an entertaining read just the same.

The do gooders and social engineers all want to control us to keep us safe from ourselves. This very silly idea is just the latest in a long line of illogical brain farts.

The media tend to play up this sort of thing as it makes "good television".

IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.

Reasons:

Technical:

GPS is inacurate and unreliable. Any fixed point can move over 200m which will tend to cause the odd bit of grief.

Data for Australia is inaccurate, partially obsolete, skewed and dependent on many incompatible sources. The actual road covereage is barely usable let alone choping it up into sectors for speed control.

Roads and speed limits change on a daily basis. How is this data going to be updated? Not everyone lives in CBD Sydney or Melbourne.

Interfacing into motor vehicles will be impossible in older cars and will be opposed by manufacturers of new cars. Aftermarket will void warranties. Foreign manufacturers will not comply as the cost for such a tiny market would be prohibitive.

The truck speed limiter system is very simple but a 100 limited truck can still do 100 in a 25km/h school zone. It seems to work well too as I have not heard of a single fatal truck accident since this morning......

Political:

It will reduce the income from speed cameras which is now a fundamental part of various state budgets.

It will be a legal mine field as when it malfunctions and causes an accident the class action agains the government and the manufacturer will be enormous. Look at the current legeal mess with speed camera mistakes in Victoria.

There will be significant pushback by motorists. Everyone likes the theory as long as it does not affext them personally. Notice how the Toyota Prius now outsells the Aurion due to "global warming and save the planet".

Yet another "children overboard" to take our attention away from the actual causes and solutions....

Actually Kev his motorway example is factorally a very real one to certain extents.

NSW will *not* mandate this system. To do so here in this state will be political suicide, guaranteed if one of our two parties were to policy support implementaion for all public motor vehicles.

The Feds could try it on, but will also fail in doing so, unless the system becomes part of the UNECE process, and if so, it would be 'optional' to states parties to contract.

Our speed limits in NSW are changing over time, I expect the rural default to drop, and some posted limits and allowances higher than current to be adopted on some lengths.

: Well Big Trev it may be a fantasy scenario, but the idea of having your life tracked by computers was also a fantasy a generation ago, the fodder of conspiracy nuts. This is not an acorn falling on an individual's head, it's an oak branch set to drop on the population.

While most of us believe in law and order, we also value our freedoms. The state over policing our lives only gives rise to dissent. There are already posts in this thread that pre-empt the proposed system, by advocating work arounds. These are presumably by members who are not hoons, so it is fairly predictable what those, who are hell bent on speeding, will subscribe to.

Realy anything to do with computers GPS or electronics can be tampered with, like the internet people can hack into virtualy anything .technology works both ways look at radar detectors then you get radar detector detectors then they make a undetectable detector and it goes on and on.

What would happen to the sale of sportscars, V8's, hell even 6 cylinder engines? Might as well just buy small cars like the yaris.

I would move overseas to countries that dont insist on taking away my ability to think and judge. Be interesting to see it happen and operate.

Sorry, BIG KEV, I mean trev, Trev. bah Big Trev, or Big_Trev!

Your Queenslanders need to pay attention to upcoming modification to QLD's existing vehicle impound and car crush laws.

A member here who resides at aus.cars Newsgroup will seek 'what these changes will be' in due course. Timeframe? Not known exactly.

I'd predict, - for a greater array of 'offences'. Wait and see.

Sometimes things can sneak in then develope too far over time as complacency sets in, QLD LIB opposition should oppose more extreme examples of regulation. Members of QLD ALP would do well to avoid the same.

Don't deal with QLD, but they'll not be happening in NSW, if they are as I suspect.

One way this could sneak in is new ways of paying for rego.

The idea is that if you do a lot of kms you pay more rego each year. If you’ve got a gleaming weekend cruiser you don’t pay for a full years rego just the few sunny days a year that you take it out. Conversely if you regularly do big km’s you pay more $$ (wear and tear on the roads?).

That is one way to suck the general population in to having on board monitoring fitted to their cars, the other argument is “well if you aren’t going to do anything illegal why would you object?”.

I think the noose is tightening. I hope I don’t see full on speed limiters (maybe Big Kev’s “forklift” restricters around school zones) but I definitely think that I will see full time tracking of my cars movements during my lifetime.

p.s. Hope that we can unplug them for when we go and play on a circuit. Sandown, Calder and Phillip Island wouldn’t be any fun at 120kmh – although it would let the late-braking nimble-handling little guys get a lot closer to the “big iron’s” lap times.

Why don't we flip this argument on it's head for a second? When auto-drive systems become available where the car drives itself, we'll be sitting there quite happily doing the speed limit.

Actually once cars drive themselves I expect we'll see them fitted with swivel seats so everyone just faces the middle and plays cards or watches TV! Shortly before that, it will be mandated that you can't drive your car yourself on major roads and it must be done by the computer. I see this happening within 50 years - gradually of course - and in the same way there are few people who ride horses today there will be few people who drive their own car. This horrifies me (since I'm a biker and I love going for rides) but I suppose my grandchildren won't give a toss since it may be all they know!

Either that or there will be a massive social revolution against computer control over everything in our lives and we all go back to being luddites!
