fpv drive day and insurance cover

Hey people

i was just wondering if anyone has done that drive day at sandown, and if you would be covered by any insurance company. Im with QBE.

i beleive there may be a motorsport type cover available..
look at shannons or give sombody from the track a ring.. or somthing
i have heard of motorsport insurance tho

shannons have track insurance. you will pay roughly 100-200 a day

my shannons policy covers any driver training , i rung them and i was covered at skidpan days , wonder if this is also the case as the fpv day is a driver education day

You'd have to check with QBE, but most insurance will cover track use for driver training courses. FPV drive days are technically driver training.
They won't cover for public track access "Drive Days" or "Test Days" though.

Don't know if they still do, but 10 years ago NRMA covered my XR8 for me to get my Racing drivers licence under my regular comprehensive insurance, as it involved Advanced & Advanced+ driver training as well as racing for my observed licence test. :eclipsee_

Have you received your FPV "kit" including the drive day invitation. I'm still waiting for mine (7 weeks). Will you be going to the drive day if so i might see you down there.


Just to keep the thread on track.....I'm insured with Shannons and they cover driver training. When i get the FPV drive day invitation I will check the wording and then ring Shannons and check (and note the name of the person i spoke to and the time i called...just in case)

Its also the reason why the organisers place witches hats around the track to "curb" track speed. With the "lower" speeds attained using witches hats, the event does not require CAMS intervention and is classified as a "driver training / education" course. Based on this, most insurance companies will cover your vehicle for usage on the day. It's always best to check, but I know Shannons provide cover for these "courses" as they are not considered TRACK or MOTORSPORT events per se..............

No, I haven't got mine yet (6 weeks). I don't know if I'll be going to the drive day, the XR8's clutch, gearbox & diff hasn't been right since doing the racing drivers course in it (despite the gearbox being rebuilt, by ford under warranty, shh. don't tell them). The Cobra's auto, but still don't want to risk damaging it. As I already know how to drive & handle performance cars, it would only really be a "fun day" for me. If someone want's to lend me their GT, GT-P or Cobra? I'll be there with bells on. Promise not to damage it (too much).

This is from the QBE on line PDS under the heading of
"WHAT YOU ARE NOT COVERED FOR"

For example, there is NO insurance when you use your vehicle
on a race track for any reason unless you have advised us first
and we agree to insure you by issuing an endorsement which
will show on your policy schedule.
5.4.3 being used:
(i) on a race track, speedway track or course,
(ii) for driver training or driver instruction on a race
track, speedway track or course unless your
policy is endorsed for such use,
(iii) in preparation for a race, time-trial, hill-climb or
any other competitive motor sport or contest,
(iv) in a rally or event where the road was closed to
public traffic;

So if this is the policy you have the simple answer is
No you are NOT covered
unless they endorse this on your policy, {which they do NOT HAVE to just because you want it, I would still say ask them though.

The FPV Driver Day is not regarded as a track day by most insurers. It's regarded as Driver Training (which is what it is) and they encourage it. Many driver training courses are run on race tracks. I know AAMI has no problem but you should get your insurer to confirm in writing (AAMI was easy as they have a very quick response to any email enquiry).

The FPV (John Bowe) Drive Day uses witches hats and shortened track length to ensure it remains as a non track day (they have to do this for their insurance and avoid all participants needing minimum CAMS safety equipment, like helmets, to go on the track).
