Default Replacing Stock Front Rotors

Hi all, I am a Member of OzECruisers but my second car is a 98 AU. The wife drives it pretty hard and the front rotors are XXXX ie The brake pedal pulsates big time under braking. My question is: What is the best replacement rotor for this model ? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers Adam.

Hi Adam,

I've used dba slotted rotors on my AU1 wagon and Bendix pads and they didn't offer anything more than what I had previously.

I'd go for a S2 upgrade, bigger discs, twin pot callipers. I did this to the wagon and nows it's oodles better.

You'll need S2-3 swaybar and mounts, uprights and lower control arm and the discs and callipers. I'd go rda slotteds and pads are up to you. You won't know yourself with such a mod.

Cheers GK, Sounds like good info. The front struts are also cactus so while im under there i may as well do a complete re-fit. I want the AU spot on as the Mrs drives it daily with the kids in it. My EA is just for work and back.

If you change pads, that should help with the shudder. I used to assume that shudder always meant discs need machining, but have found with 2 cars that it could also be caused be seizing callipers. At $25 a side, putting a calliper kit through the callipers is cheaper than machining discs, and could be the issue.

The AU2 upgrade (if you do the work yourself), should only costs a around $300 more than fitting DBA slotted rotors, and as GK says is a great upgrade. IMO, the Slotteds are better than standard, especially with repeated heavy braking, but the AU2 upgrade is the best of the bunch for an AU1.

You can also use parts from BA through BFII. The front suspension parts as listed by GK are identical from AUII through BFII. AU2/3 use a 287mm rotor, BA & later standard rotors are 298mm, but the mountings for the rotors and calipers are the same. If you can't get all the parts from one car, just make sure that the rotors and calipers are from the same series car so they will match.

BTW you will also need 16" minimum wheels to fit over the bigger discs if you don't already have them.

I took the AU in today for a check and the fronts were ok to be machined. They ripped em off and machined them and replaced the pads which were rooted with Bendix pads. $200 and im happy with that as i pulled up and told them i want it done within the hour. 20 mins later i was on my way. The job done is a credit to the guys at Combined Clutch & Brake Geelong.
