Further to LPGUTE's thread on wheel studs:

Why do some AU's have long wheel studs on the rear?

When I was a taxi mechanic i never seemed to work out why.

I don't think it was IRS or LSD.

Anyone know?

Luck of the draw I think. Just to confuse things a bit more than just whether they used long ones on the rear and normal on the front, or all the same sized all round etc, my AU1 XR8 had long ones on the rear left, and the normal sized ones everywhere else.

This caused massive fitting problems when I bought my Apec Apaches as they had the internal hex head wheel nuts, and I had the longest ones made, and they still didn't fit on the LR. So, I went and bought 2 new sets from Ford (one long, one regular), and then read up on what was involved in changing them on the IRS rear. Let's just say, I didn't fancy the bearing falling into 3 separate pieces, so in the end, a grinder on the longer studs did the trick I needed it to do (shorten the studs to fit the special wheel nuts that had to be used with the wheels I had bought).

yeah, it always seemed luck of the draw from what i found. i wonder if there is any differential differences with them. I only ever saw long ones on the rear, and only in sets.
