Default diff problems

how do i know if i need to replace my diff.

there is always this weird soft hollow noise coming from the back of the car and it gets so annoying if you have no music on. its an auto and when it goes down in gears while stopping it between each gear te noise is louder for 2 seconds then dies down

when was the last time you checked/changed the diff oil in it ?
