Default Security code radio removal

G'day,

My radio in my 98 AU wagon was not working for the last 4 years, well it powered up but i did not have the security code to activate it.

So i thought bugger going to ford for them to code it so i removed it and replaced it with a JVC unit.

I have connected the earth, power and the yellow cable correctly and the JVC turns on with a message saying "SEE YA" then turns off after 2 seconds.

Could this be becasue i didnt have the Security code on the ford radio before i removed it? I dont think the head unit is faulty,
would a radio installation shop be able to overide this hassle?
I am out of options to do this myself.

Any help appreciated.
Cheers
George.

Sounds like it is turning off as soon as you turn it on. Can you turn it back on after it does this??

It would not be related to the old radio.

As soon as i plug the loom to the head unit, it powers up gives me the "SEE YA" message and turns off.

I cannot turn the radio on by pressing the power on/off button.
If i turn off the ignition and plug the loom back in it repeats the message and then off again.

I can put in CD's and remove CD's at any time.

Nothing to do with the old unit

Your either not getting a good earth or not enough draw through the power

Too complex for me.
Time to open up the wallet and head down to the installation shop.
Cheers.

Try pushing some buttons on the new headunit. I remember installing a Pioneer headunit once and being so frustrated that it wouldn't turn on, until I decided to push a button which brought it to life.

The power button does not do anything
The select button turns it on, then the unit turns itself off.

I too have tried all the buttons but unlike your situation it does nothing.

Also, I installed a Clarion unit into a car once and I ended up frying some chip inside the unit itself and the symptoms were similar to yours.

LOL not literally frying a chip, as delicious as that may have been!

As in destroying a silicon chip.

most stereo shops etc have a bridging loom that plugs into the aftermarket headunit and connects up to the factory connectors.. I'd be getting one of those to cancel out any wiring woes.

I'd be installing the original back in, walk into a Ford service department with your VIN number and ask em for the radio code. They might want to see rego papers too, but I doubt it

You mean it cost YOU $15. Most ford dealers will give the information for nothing to their customers (with valid proof of title etc).

Sounds like you have the yellow and red wires mixed up. Swap them around and you should be fine. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OLD RADIO! Plus don't put that back in, they are .

Swapping the wires around has the same effect, the unit did the same thing.
I'v installed radios in boats trucks cars before but this has me dumbfounded.
I'll let the expert 18yo's at the install shop to have a go.
Will update over the weekend on how they go about it.
Cheers.

Hi mate, sorry for the thread bump, but how did this go? I've got a mate who is trying to upgrade the stereo in his EF and it is doing the exact same thing.

Cheers

get a multimeter out and check to make sure you have 12v at both the yellow and red wires. changing the wires around won't make any difference. all that does is erases the memory when you turn the key off. when the key is on they should both have 12v

I agree with LAMINGE that there is not enough current being drawn.

Find another temporary power supply to see if it makes any difference.

Hi guys,

If you still haven't had any luck i might have a theory. There is a white wire in the factory loom which shows up as ground when you test it. It is actually an option for something else. Make sure you haven't connected ground to this white wire. Constant power in AU's is yellow, Acc is a purple one i think, and ground is definately a black wire. Also, see if plugging in the antenna helps, i had a similar problem with a kenwood unit.
