Default Alloy Tailshaft In AU's?

Hey guys

just wondering if AU's have alloy tailshafts as standard?

A mate of mine said he got a alloy tailshaft out of a AU Wagon and fitted it in his XG ute.

cheers

I threw my original tailshaft when my rear seal died a few years back. The alloy would help develop more power due to less reciprocating weight. However the alloy shafts are said to be weaker.

I have an AU alloy tailshaft for sale very soon. Just bought myself a 2 piece tailshaft from a Pursuit 250.

I went from an alloy to a steel shaft (snapped the alloy @ the front uni). The car definitely seems a bit more sluggish off the line with the steel shaft.

So yes in my experience they are alloy shafts standard.

I had massive balance problems with my AU1 wagon from new. Ford would do nothing under warranty. I even gave it to them for the weekend and told them to thrash it up the freeway as I did not want to drive to Nth. QLD and end up with arthritus in both wrists. They said the vibes were ok and did stuff all. I took the vehicle to Berryman Balancing in Melb. and her found that the unees were welded into the alloy tube offset. the only remady was to put in new unees and offset them in the opposite direction. It then was able to be balanced perfectly without having to weld a lead ingot to the side of the tube. It cost a bag of bucks but turned out fine.

I heard some story that the reason the cars have speed limiters is because they throw the alloy tailshaft out at over 200kph or something, anyone heard this, kind of sounds like a urban legend.

Hey

I heard opposite for some reason, I heard that the 180kph speed limiters on the e series is to stop the steel shaft snapping, but the alloys fixed that...

I dont want to jinx it, but i know for a fact my brothers AU1 XR8 has been off the clock many times and its got a alloy shaft.

Boy it wouldnt want to be true for this fella

No myth or urban legend guys. Data_mine a member on here, snapped a tailshaft on his old EL (I think) while it was on a dyno. Very, VERY, lucky no one was hurt. Made a big mess too... Theres some photos hanging around somewhere

yeah i heard it was the steel shafts as it high revolutions the shaft shrinks and falls out the back of the gearbox and this causing it to destroy itself.
the cops actually fixed this by getting a carbon tape of some form put around the shafts.
and then ford put the alloy shafts in to stop it also.
cheers josh.

It was due to the base model tailshafts being a single piece, at high speeds there was the possibility of the tailshaft vibrating itself to pieces. Or symptoms to that effect.

The XR's don't have speed limiters (I just love mine) but don't the XR's have different shafts to the base models
Had my VCT up to 240 recently. not a problem. the bi plane helps keep it on the road

That does make more sense that the steel heavier shaft vibrate worse.

ELGT's had a carbon fibre wrapped alloy tailshaft put in by Tickford at the time.
The 180 kph speed limit was for the utes, as they have a longer tailshaft, and breakage etc.
The standard sedans had the speed limiters set because they dont need to go any faster, not necessary.

Steel shafts are good and plenty strong, all depends on the thickness etc, they have been used for years in all sorts of motorsport.

A good balance, and maintenence on the uni's will prevent breakage, but remember that cars are machines and you do get breakages.

By the way grechie, i have a spare AU XR8 ute alloy tailshaft, its a bit weathered, but will cleanup ok.
Let me know if you want it.

Depends on what the alloy is. Just remember an alloy is just a mix of two or more metals. So to be picky steel is an alloy...
