Question Holden Sportswagon to Win COTY !

Its coming up to COTY time again. We all know WHEELS is heavily biased towards HOLDEN. Whats the odds the Sportswagon wins COTY and not the fantastic FG?

Isnt car of the year for the entire range? Sportswagon would be part of VE commodore.

The BA won COTY. The Territory also won COTY. They were, before FG, the last two models released by FordAU, and they both won. How is that biased towards Holden?

Thread title seems a little too strong, especially based on speculation. I don't think the Sportswagon will win anything over the FG range. I didn't think the wagon was a contender anyway.

edit: It seems the wagon isn't a contender afterall.

What will let the FG down is the LPG versions.

Look at the competition then....VY/Z

It would be embarrasing to award either of those car of the year.

Even if the wagon was a contender I still think the FG would win because its not a popularity contest but moreso what really is the BEST car released that year. I would be worried about the Accord Euro personally.

The VY wasn't eligible due to lack newness. Barring that, it wasn't the point I was making was it.

VY and BA weren't the only cars that were released in 2002, to be honest I wouldn't have at all been surprised or upset if the original Mazda 6 had of taken the gong. More than anything I would suggest that Wheels have a almost predictable habit of awarding the gong to whatever Holden Commodore/ Ford Falcon they can.

On the topic of the VE Hatch, I just don't get it, if you want a small wagon, get a small wagon (Mazda 6, Subaru Liberty etc) if you want a big wagon get a big wagon, I just think it's for people that want something but don't know what

I have to question the original posters motive behind even considering the VE wagon winning COTY, especially with the FG around :

I mean, COMEON!

I also enjoy Wheels mag, not as much as the last few years (theyve lost a few good writers) but Carey and Stahly always make a good read.

Too bad it's ineligible. It may just be marketing exercise "sportswagon", but Holden have to be congratulated for spicing up a rep-mobile. If Ford took the same lead, they'd actually use the fact that 95% of taxis are falcons.

I don't think the sportwagon would even be elegible (not different enough - yes even the new body style). More imporantly, not really worth it just for the wagon version when many other new cars have been launched.

Whether you dislike wheels or not (and i actually think they aren't too bad all things considered) the fact is Ford has had a very good recent history with Wheels COTY.

From 2002-2007 (6 COTY) Ford has competed 4 times won twice (2002 BA 2004 Territory), and come in the top three (effectively equal runner up) twice (2nd Gen Focus 2005??, Mondeo 2007). This is much better than Holden or most other large manufacturers (Toyota etc.), most of which have had pretty poor results (cars ruled not worthy of testing or booted after the first round - i think every toyota except Aurion??). Holden did win with VE but virtually nill chance in any other area.

If you look at future prospects well FG has a real shot for 2008 and Fiesta (just missed out on euro coty by 1 point) another decent contender in 2009. I would say Mazda 3 and 6 (moreso the former IMO, latter good but hardly a massive improvement) are real shots, but most other cars the FG should be able to best......

Wheels COTY has a rigid and definite list of criteria and even the judges are sometimes surprised by the outcome using this system. In the final stage votes are counted but i think FG should get through to at least the top 3.

The Mazda 6 is a good model and would be a good pick for a mid sized car. Also the MPS is quite a capable vehicle.

Thats a bit harsh. When was the last time Ford made a good looking wagon? I'd say it was probably the XC with a chrome roof rack, wind deflector and an electric tail gate.
Since then they seem to have just put a flat slab on the back with a window. No thought into making the rear end look good.
Personally I love the look of these sportswagon, a bit 300c looking which I also like.

The VE wagon came close to last in the Carsguide COTY, so it would have been no match for the FG anyway.

You spent time in a Calais with a hatch back... unless you looked backward its just a Calais.
