slow at work so i thought i would tell my good mates of my new car err well its a vl commodor $250(alot better than my first bush basher witch was a EK holden 3on the tree),i bought for my sons 14th birth day ,hes been on at me for awhile about wanting a coupe xa xb xc as if im going to give him one at 14 ha ha,going to paint the commodor mat black(rough as guts job)if any one knows him DONT TELL HIM ITS A SURPRISE,will post a few pics of the car doing a few jumps and genraly being thrashed (all on privte property to keep the fun police happy)nothing much more fun than a father and son having fun kaining a holden i say

agreed my good man,my wepon of choice is my xf witch my son has driven around the farm,still raves on how he was doing doeys in the paddock with the speedo reaching 140km got to loooover wet grass :

The best start to a life behind the wheel I reckon. Will learn how to control a car when it gets out of shape ect.

I would let him have some fun in it and learn to control it and use it safley. Then introduce some old wrecks into the paddok and put a cage in his car and get him to do some work around the wrecks, just to show him how much damage can be done with a car when he hits these wrecks.... and he will hit them... if he don't make him.

Good one! I had a old xr falcon that i used to thrash out bush, loved that car it never let me down. your dead right it's the best way to learn how to drive

done some good jumps in the xf,unfortuneatly during its former life some one lowered it n landings can b ruff!!but all crazy driving aside pottering around a paddock with the old man keeping an eye on things is a top way to lern i reckon

Sounds funny but every kid should be given a bush basher and a paddock when young, it soon brings the comic book hero stuff back down to earth.

We had an old renoult (S) that had been rolled from the wreckers, no windows but was great, took it out to the mud flats and spent weekends trying to roll it (again) ( impossible on the slippery mud ) but we sure as hell learnt how to put a car sideways and what happens if you oversteer and every other combination.

Fun times we also had a morris that we would run at full tilt into a long puddle on the track, water everywhere and holding onto that puppy was a real dinger when hitting the water, but agin it showed us what to do when hitting a wet spot on the roads and you lost all traction due to aqua planing.

Jumped the morry as well, a high embankment , used to line it up and flog straight up the hill, there was one day I lost all fear and felt like evil kenival, opened that puppy up flat and hit the hill, the morry went up , floated then came down nose first before dropping back onto all 4 wheels. tough cars back then as all we needed to do was change the bent rim and then back to trying to destroy the car.

Bloody good fun all should do this and maybe there would be less stories from people saying i was turning right at the intersection and for some magic reason i lost it went up onto the footpath and found the fence, not sure why ?

We had a 71' Corolla 2 door. I drove it along with my brothers from age 6 till I was about 15 and all we had to replace in that time was a welsh plug, a clutch plate and brake pads. It tore the paddock bare and during the dust mum wasn't happy with the washing getting dirty, but it certainly set us up driving wise for later on in life.

If anything, once I got my license (L's) it felt weird to drive normally on the road, without throwing it sideways into a corner. More driving skills should be taught as part of the driving test.

cob good idea mate best thing my cousins ever did was save up and get a datto to smash around on their farm. 3 10 year olds didn't even eat lollies for a year, and their all girls! Wish I had land n a block..

Great way to go rather than throwing them the keys on the day of getting their L's. Bouncing off things in paddocks teaches them very quickly.

Drove an old FJ45 L'Cruiser when I could reach the pedals around the paddock and taught me heaps very quickly. When I was old enough I jumped on a bus to Adelaide and came back with my license next day. Had 5 years 'Learner' driving before being able to drive legally ...... at 16. Living in the country is great and would move back tommorrow

my kids both 16 and 13 have had a basher since i can remember...set them up safe and not only are the a heap of fun, but great for the learning curve....the best one so far is the old VW what is better... no radiator, engine in the rear ( so not much damage when you hit the fence posts...lol), motor straight over the wheels....
Nothing but fun, also they break it they fix it.....

I could not agree more, farm kids have it so good with bush bashers.

As a kid I had a Mini Cooper S (worth nothing back then) wish I hadn't wrecked it now. Then I had a HT Holden, XY ute and the list goes on. It is the only way to explore a car and the capabilities of you and machine. Some would say it is a boyhood love affair, some grow out of it, some don't.

Never have been for a paddock fang or bush bash. Steered through a gate once when I was little but never got a chance since :(

Sounds like a good way to find the limits before being on the road!

My sister and I had an old '58 Nissan Patrol 4 x 4 to play with.
It had no doors, no brakes, the clutch was dodgy, and she'd rusted that much the back of the cab used to lift off as we went over bumps.
We weren't allowed to thrash it at all, but we learnt a lot about driving skills.
All kids should be able to have a bush basher, it's a tradition!

Its never too late!! For less then $1000 you would be surprised how much fun you can have with little poo-boxes.

I hear you there! I've driven a 1980 with a locker, unreal fun. I don't know about unbreakable, cracked the oil filter housing.

We just had a recent burial with a D6. We buried an EA Fairmont Ghia which we got for a cartoon of beer, drove it to the 750 acre bush block that is 135ks from home. Drove like a dream on the road but being auto and an alloy head , it didnt last long in the bush, an XE auto sedan, a VB Commy sedan, a VC commy wagon and a front wheel drive Hyundai 4 cylinder 5 speed sedan which we got for a box of beer and also drove out to the block. Guess which one lasted the longest ?? The VB commy followed by the Hyundai........

Awesome stuff for the young ones (& old ones) My grandparents have 40,000 acers in WA. Loved it as a kid, was driving as soon as I could see over the wheel! Even not long ago I was working on a massive cattle station in outback qld desert and on our days off all we did was play : this was my toy and my favourite play, finding anything to squash! -

Don't need the land to have fun in a crapbox! While paddocks are better, getting a crap box on the road can be just as fun, and I'm not talking about breaking the law fun. We had a communal N13, and you could flog the hell out of it and never break the speed limit, it was loud and low and it felt like you were doing 150km/h at 60. And if you break it, well who cares?
