Here's a modern reproduction of the original 300SL.
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/23/g...ercedes-300sl/ That looks the goods to me!! PS The new one looks alright, but not an instant winner. Except the doors

One thing I'm curious about is the kerb weight that has been stated as 1600kg or thereabouts, but the engine only weighs around 250kg. How does Mercedes engineer so much weight into the car? The excess kilos were what made the SLR such a pig, I can only hope that this one is more of a success in that regard. I mean if other German premium manufacturers can produce sports cars that weigh in sub 1500kg, why can't Mercedes?

It's the first Mercedes in a long time that is worth getting excited about in my opinion. I love it!

I think its a very well executed modern interpretation of the classic 300sl, while retaining current Mercedes styling motifs.

I actually quite like it, looks better than most other Merc's nowdays, and also good to see its no longer a McMerc like the SLR!

as a merc i like it...having said that- as a gullwing, i just think fail!!
the original was pure elagance, yeah for it's day it was also pretty sporty- but it had a timeless beauty, i fail to see this one looking as good in 40 years time. just my 2 cents worth.

That is one of the ugliest cars I have ever seen. Only the early Ssanyongs were as eye-burningly, appallingly hideous as that abortion of design lunacy.
It looks as though someone has taken a buzz saw and some glue to a Honda S2000 and a Lexus SC430. And that is the most inefficient use of a massive engine bay since the old Valiants. You could almost fit the 1000hp 13 Liter V16 from the Cadillac Sixteen Concept in there and yet they have squeezed in a small V8 and a lot of plastic. I want Clarkson to drive one through a shed or drop a skip on it or something. Or use it to jump some caravans. [/rant]
