Thumbs down New meaning of 'hoon'?

I haven't bothered to post the entire story, but here's the link: http://www.theage.com.au/technology/...0910-fipj.html

The title of the story is 'Hacked by hoons: how an attack on PM's website unravelled', and is a story about a failed denial of service attack on the PMs website.

So, my question is, what does a story about hacking have to do with hoons?

I believe the correct term for these people is "crackers" (not the racist word for a white person). Not hoons.

I remember when someone threw a rock at Burt Newton's car or something and it was "hoons on bycicles". You'd have to be pretty good to get sideways or blow the back tyre off on a pushbike.

Umm, it's hackers. Crackers is what you put your brie on.
Does this mean I'm now a hoon at work and in the car?

Quote:
DEFINITION - A cracker is someone who breaks into someone else's computer system, often on a network; bypasses passwords or licenses in computer programs; or in other ways intentionally breaches computer security. A cracker can be doing this for profit, maliciously, for some altruistic purpose or cause, or because the challenge is there. Some breaking-and-entering has been done ostensibly to point out weaknesses in a site's security system.

The term "cracker" is not to be confused with "hacker". Hackers generally deplore cracking. However, as Eric Raymond, compiler of The New Hacker's Dictionary notes, some journalists ascribe break-ins to "hackers."

I can't help but think it's part of the greater cause... throwing the book at 'hoons', even if it's a minor infraction like breaking traction shifting into second.

By associating all manner of illegal behaviour with 'hoons', the next time someone squeals a tyre, the media will have a field day and new laws will be brought in to limit high performance cars, etc. etc. And who'll speak out against it? After all, 'hoons' are criminals.... they drive crazy, hack into websites, etc. etc. Anti-hoon laws will become 'anti-criminal laws' in the eyes of the public.

Better put my aluminium hat back on.

It wasn't hackers, cracker or hoons. But instead a 'white hat' security audit. Gov't agencies were warned a few weeks ago that something would happen yesterday - they weren't told how or who would be attacked.

Again media no clue, no truth.

Ah no, it was a group loosely associated with 4chan.

They have issues with the Rudd Govts internet censorship plan.

Unfortunately they dont see that actions like this are more likely to hurt the anti censorship lobby.

The warning was the one the group (anonomyous they call themselves) posted up for everyone to see and they told the govt what they were going to do.

"Scriptkiddies" is what they are being called on IT forums rather than Hoons....
I reckon we hoons should lobby to be called Honkys..........double meaning at least!

Try Black Hat Hacker. Cracker is a stupid term.
Also
my nana thinks a hoon is essentially a vandal so they might just be stuck in 1928.

It is, but thats what it "officially" has to be called on our IT Exam, or no mark given.

I'd put it up to 4chan to try something considering everyone who belongs to their groups is known "anonymous" and thats what they call themselves.

Ah yes.........they have a website and variety of other things.

They have an ongoing campaign against the church of scientology etc as well.

I suppose your going to say the Rudd Govt spends its time talking like 15 year olds and hacking the church of scientology too?

I'll just say, it was an organised 'white hat' event. All gov't departments were warned of it weeks out (and were even given the right date), what wasn't specified was which departments would get hit and how.

It was an intrusion testing exercise and the failures made it public.

I WAS INVOLVED in this. No 4chan involvement at all.

You don't have to believe me, but that's what happened.

Sorry but this still cracks me up.

You know that rather incompetent Federal Minister Conroy? The ones whos portfolio the internet is? He even commented on this and wasnt happy about it being done.....no mention of any test....clear blame and it was ref to the AFP.

So if your claiming it was some secret test that for some eleborate reason the Govt had to create a huge amount of false intel and websites etc months out........then why would you be talking about it on a public forum?

Oh thats right you wouldnt or you would be getting the big boot and your security clearance revoked.

Well you seem to be suggesting a need to create an elaborate public hoax for an internal test........care to tell me about 9/11 being an inside job too

If you want to call me a know it all then claim you know it all from some inside knowledge ....that if you actually had you wouldnt talk about on a public forum then please consider that lots of other people work in places that will know whats going on as well and can call baloney baloney.

Have a nice day

bdave351, unfortunately you're just displaying your ignorance about white hat security stress testing. the best way to do it is to emulate as much of an outside attack as possible.

And getting lots of people to set up websites, have chats etc, conduct attacks on scientology websites...........then get the Federal Minister involved talking to the media about it.
Yes the sites were warned about it beforehand.....geez it was on youtube for anyone to see.

All of that is completely unneccassary to any testing of a system.

Its simply beyond comprehension to suggest that a federal minister would need to be involved in a massive hoax like that for a simple test.........and this incredible well held secret would be leaked on a car forum.

Come on people.....really....your giving the public service far to much credit.

I suppose the latest 'threat' from the anonymous lot is another part of the ongoing elaborate hoax too?

qouted from elsewhere "We need something besides DDoSing. Seriously It's giving anonymous a bad name. DDoS is like trying to break into a building by making hundreds of people run into its walls. I'm talking trying to sql inject any gov.au page or just get into the back end and retrieve data aka Usernames and Passwords. If you do find anything do not talk about it in the IRC due to spais and the AFP being in there and they blocked us out from accessing a previous exploit found. It seems the Government isn't afraid of us and the media thinks we are a joke. We need to fix this."

(Please dont think I in anyway support these lot, they are harming the anti censorhip lobby by giving Labour ammunition to say they need to crack down on the net )

bdave351, I'm not taking any sides here as I don't have the "inside information", but do you believe everything you read on the Internet?
Could it possibly be this Anonymous group setting up the hoax? How hard is it to spoof an IRC chat and then claim responsibility?
On the other hand, I can't say that what data_mine says is true either as I don't work for the government.

Doofey I beleive very little I read on the net and this thread is the perfect example of it

If anyone can give one simple common sense reason as to why the Govt would need to set up this test in a way that they lie to the public by PUBLICLY ATTACKING A VERY CONTROVERSIAL LABOUR POLICY then please do bring it forth?

Its like if the Howard Govt had decided to run a test on breaking into the refugee camps during the children overboard incident with a fake group claiming they were being tortured inside.............thats simply not the way the Govt is run in this country.

And of course we have agents out being paid chasing these people down.....so I suppose that means everyone forgot to tell the AFP it was only a test?
