Custom Tune for AU V8

Hi everyone,

just wanna get an opinion on getting a car custom tuned. I wanna get my AU XR8 220kw custom tuned. However, the only fuel supply i can access is 95 octane...

I have been informed by a pretty well known person, but will not mention names that getting a tune done with 95 octane is crap.... And that i will only gain 5kws at most from a custom tune.

Has anybody had there car tuned on 95 before? I dont car what model AU, BA, FG, V8 or I6... What results have you gained with a custom tune on 95 octane....

220 s are 95 tuned from the factory,with a custom tune unless you have other mods IMO be a waste of time most of the gain from 98 ron is had through Timing advance. although you could add a bottle of octane boost and reset your flash box with a separate tune. : Just a thought

Will disgaree here and say that for the tune you should go with the fuel you use and have access to the most. I tuned my old AU on 95RON as it is what I ran in it 99% of the time because at that time the supply of 98RON could not always be guaranteed here, I can't remember the exact numbers before and after the tune but there was still a noticable difference.

As with all tuning you should not be concerned with numbers but rather how the car behaves and drives before and after - that is how I measure how 'good' a tune really is.

Yeh, im not after huge numbers lol, just wanna get it running better as its running extremely rich atm.. I have most bolt on mods, G&D CAI, twin 2 1/2, di filippo 4-1s...Hi flow cats... Upgrading to MSD coil packs and leads soon to try and sort out my idle.... Anyone know if MSD is good? Or any other brands? I wanna get new plugs, leads and coil packs cos my car runs sooo rich..... Do AU Autos have torque tags? Do these get removed in tuning?

a custom tune sometimes wont bring your peak kw up by much but you would probably notice a big improvement throughout the rev range, probably have a lot more lower rpm pickup
even if they say its tuned to 95ron factory, remember the factory tune is a very very safe tune! there would still be room to advance the timing and youd get more power from an improved air/fuel ratio

There is no room to advance timing on a 220 they have a heap stock. If you go to a tuner and he says he's going to put timing in, walk away because it will ping its nut off and probably burn a piston if ignored.

Mine has had timing pulled out, You get gains from pulling fuel out because from stock they run very rich from around three grand and most end up with AFR's in the tens. Now my AFR's start at 13.5 from 1500rpm and and run along at about 12.8 all the way from 3000rpm to 5600rpm.

Your mods sound similar to what mine had, yes autos do have torque tags and most tuners will edit them out for a better off the line response. The MSD gear is good and the best bit is it is a straight fit.

Mine did run very rich for the brief time it was in stock form - it had a Unichip when I bought it and over time that deteriorated to the point where I had to return it back to stock - I could not believe how rich it ran, black buildup on the exhaust, smelt of fuel etc etc. The tune certainly fixed that.

oops.. im no expert on 220kw windsors lol.. i just assumed the factory tune would be similar to most other ford factory tunes
i suppose its tuned up a bit from the 200kw anyway?

Hey Stattic, No probs. Not long after i got my car i went to Chiptorque for a power run just to see what it had atw and see were the AFR's where at, anyway as expected AFR ran in the 10s after four grand, Now this bloke said that Tickford put alot of timing in the 220s and alot of fuel so there is power to be had by pulling fuel but you must pull timing out first, now this guy was a Ford man but had turned to the dark side and only tuned Holden's when i went there. A few months later i got a custom tune at a well known Ford specialist and they put timing in and pulled fuel out so no long after i was back there because of detonation.....And to cut a very long story short about twelve months later i went to Xtreme ford tuning and got a good tune with plenty of power and now Dramas.

Thats one of the first things I noticed when I got my dyno sheets. AFRs hold steady to around 3000rpm then sink like a stone on the factory tune.
