Default Koni Yellows Won't Fit!!!!!!!

Hi Guys,

Picked up my Koni shocks for my S1 Fairmont GHIA the other day. Reds for the front & yellows for the back with IRS...

Got a problem!!!! The reds I fitted yesterday & are fine.... Drives nice on the soft setting!!! Am waiting for the yellows to go on till I adjust...

The yellows I tried to fit today & they didn't fit!!!!!!
When I say they didn't fit, the top of the shaft on the shock won't go through the top shock mount hole..... the shaft diameter on the shock seems to be bigger than the diameter of the shock mount?????

The part number for the rear shocks is 8241 1167SPORT.
Do I have the right Shocks??? Has this happened to anyone else??? :

They are the right ones according to the Koni website.

get out the gas axe!

Chopped fairmont!

Seriously though, is the correct part number written on the shocks? Maybe they got packaged wrong.

Pretty sure this is the post that you are referring to!
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpos...0&postcount=65

"found my problem it was me , never did learn to read instructions , the missing link is the Koni yellows are longer in the shaft and thicker than the Ford/Monroe units, apart from drilling through the top plate and mount right through with 12 mm, you have to drill a 16 mm diameter hole up into the bottom of of the upper mount, NOT ALL THE WAY THROUGH, i found about 25 mm so that allows for the longer shaft to slide up further into the top mount and locate the spring properly for when the suspension is unloaded, from memory the alloy bit you have to drill into is about 40 mm in depth so there is still a bit of meat there, also you will need a spacer to go over the top thin bit of shaft, i found drilling the alloy bit a problem it wanted to spin in the rubber (yes its tired i`ll replace down the track), so a couple of 4 mm holles drilled to depth of about 4mm either side of the shaft hole and used my angle grinder key to stop it spinning while drilling the other end did the job."

Also, not completely related, but I did some mining on the original post I did regarding Koni's for my AU....and just noticed that the part numbers for AU's with IRS (aufairmontghia) as opposed to Live Axle (me) are different at the front?? I would have thought that all AU's would have the same front end part.......

AU'S WITH LIVE AXLE REAR:
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpos...5&postcount=55
Fronts: K8241-1166SPORT
Rears: K8041-1067SP1

AU'S WITH IRS:
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpos...6&postcount=70
(f) 8241-1166 SP1
(r) 8241-1167 Sport

Would anybody be able to say why the part numbers at the front would be different?

Changing post too:
The part numbers you gave are the same, just missing a letter or two. The front are the same for all AU's only difference is series 2 on got a lug welded to slip the brake hose in.

You must drill the hole out in the mount , it is only soft and does not take much to drill

This must be why they say "Once you have Konis, you'll never go back!".

Quick question on the top shock mount.
I'll drill them out with a 12mm drill bit when I fit up the Koni's again!!!

Now I replaced the top shock mounts not too long ago & are in good condition.

If the centre section spins while drilling does that mean they have seperated from the housing & are stuffed???? Or are they still OK????

i had the same problem with the alloy bit rotating, i still havent changed the top mount and its hanging in there ok, but i suspect it may allow a little more movement than would otherwise be with new mounts, i left my back seats down with the covers folded forward on the rear shocker towers and checked them out while my brother was driving , they don`t appear (on mine anyway) to be going to push through the rubber even while going over our fairly bumpy streets, and its handling very nice almost to the point i`ve had second thoughts about changeing sway bars, i had an evil thought when i was at repco regarding the expensive top irs mount on our Henry`s i was going to change mine at that time on the weekend , they did`nt have one anyway, but they did show me a commodore one , it looked about 1 tenth the size of our Ford one and cheap to boot, it occured to me perhaps a commy one may be adapted to our Au`s, i will look at this a little bit down the track, please don`t banish me for thinking of commiting AU dultery with holden parts :

Have you thought about getting a professional to install them? that way if any problems, it's on their heads (and cost) to fix?!
