Default WTB mk1 2 doors

Thanks for your posts.

I have checked out 2 recently. 1 was on ebay for $17,500, which was in excellent condition and pretty much what I was after however the chassis number started with an N (a police issued number). I was not really comfortable buying it as I wasn't sure of the history of the car and it would be difficult to sell it when I come to part ways with it.

The second car was the one up at Maitland for $22,500 which again was in good condition however it was set up for tarmac rallies and would take a little bit to get full registration.

Both owners were really helpful which is not always the case.

Well I suppose I will keep looking, if anyone has any other ideas that would be great.

Cheers

The car had a chassis number on the compliance plate as well as another chassis number stamped on the chassis.

The number on the compliance plate is obviously the one which it came out with originally i.e starting with CK44.

The number stamped on the chassis was recently stamped on to the car and is a number issued by the police after (now correct me if I am wrong) the car was either stolen and recovered or a repairable write off. These numbers typically start with N and in this case started with N1N. This chassis number is the one on the rego papers and when checked with revs came out with no issues.

For this reason, I was not 100% comfortable paying that sort of cash. Whilst I think that was a fair price for the car because it was in excellent condition. When I would have come to sell it, I wouldn't be able to say exactly why it had the second chassis number on it. For this reason I think it would be harder to sell and don't really want to be in that position.

I was pretty disappointed as nearly everything else about the car was what I was after.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. I'm assuming for the money you would be paying, they will be supplying RWC and rego.
I've been buying and selling Escorts and Capris for quite a few years and you come across plenty on anomalies with vins and engine numbers, but as long as you have some form of rego or previous rego you shouldn't have any problems with re-registering the car. As for re-sale of the car, I would expect if you are going to pay that sort of money you would want to hang onto the car for awhile.
To be honest, there are not many people willing to pay more than $10,000-$15,000 for an Escort unless its a Twin Cam or a RS2000 (Mk 1). Even then the market is very limited. Modified race cars (although probably worth the money) are very difficult to sell as most racers would prefer to buy cheap and build themselves.
I bought a solid Mk 2 Coupe fitted with a Zetec recently. By the time I'm finished with it, it will owe me just over $10,000. Thats fully engineered and registered and good for about 150RWbhp.
Good luck with your search.
