Default tuning 2l pinto

hi everyone just wondering if anyone one has a step to step guide on how to tune a 2l pinto im having a hard time to tune this car i am only young and practice makes perfect i suppose and i also need to know hot to set the dwell angle wich is 1 thing i dont have a clue about any help is appreciated
my idles fluctuate the ca rbackfires when you flatten the acclerator shoots fire out the carby

Best thing to do straight up is to get a Gregory's service manual. You can find them on ebay for cheap or have a look around 2nd hand book shops. All of the info you need for tuning a 2L pinto will be in there, and you can refer back to it for the life of the car. If you're going to tackle any tuning job, you will need this manual.

Then you'll need to sort yourself out with some basic tools. If your distributor is running points ignition then you won't be able to tune the car without some feeler gauges. You'll need those feeler gauges for setting spark plug gaps as well.

A shifter, some metric spanners (don't know if you'll need any imperial sizes?), a digital multimeter, timing light etc. The multimeter will help you set your dwell angles. The manual will give you an idea of the other tools you'll need.

If the carburettor hasn't been serviced in years, get yourself a carburettor kit and replace all o-rings, gaskets etc. Give yourself plenty of time.
Hope you have fun & learn a few things on the way. They're great engines to play with.

cheers mate its all about learning i suppose got it running a bit better but now when i take it for a drive it wont move like under load it has no power but while in neutral it revs clean and runs good its got me stumped i might try and advance the timing see if that helps

doubt it if it idles and revs fine with no load,try coil,dissy cap,points gap.vac advance in dizzy or dizzy springs.

Ive got to fix the same thing on a 2ltr this weekend sometime when i get to it.

sounds like your problem is one of two things really ..distributer condensor or carby power valve depending on the carby your running ...inorder to set dwell angle you need a dwell meter and a gregorys to tell you the correct dwell angle range for your motor .

I've got a number of escort books and I must say that Gregory's is my least favourite. It skips many steps and is a bit short on photos. I would go a genuine ford repair manual, costs a bit more but worth it. Otherwise a Haynes manual...but a Gregorys is better than nothing

If your happy with spending the money it should cost around $150 to get the standard carby rebuilt. Just take it off the manifold and head over to your nearest carby shop.
If not, buy a carby service kit from ebay (make sure it's genuine weber kit) and do it yourself. It's not too hard, just don't lose any parts.

The Gregorys Manual will tell you everything you need to set up the timing and everything to tune the engine. If i had one on me i'd tell you but its at home

spark plug gap: 0.75mm
contact breaker gap: 0.40mm to 0.50mm
dwell angle: 50deg
timing:
6 deg@ 500rpm if it's manual
4 deg @ 500rpm if it's automatic
