I agree with the bit in bold. We have idiots in our street (with distincitve cars too - not hard to know who they are) that do "skids" on every corner at 1am on Saturday/Sunday mornings every now and then. One day they may find some stray oil on a corner leading them to a stray tree.

Hope the stray oil doesn't lead them to stray into your driveway whilst your kids may be playing in it, but I hear your frustration regarding idiots in your street. Hey, but if they are not making noise and smoke they'll be OK

I can understand the frustration too, we often get people racing between roundabouts on Valley Way, using the roundabouts as turning points (they are wide two lane ones), usually with tyre smoke and a lot of yaw angle. Makes it a bit of a worry coming home late at night after a 11 pm finish at work, I approach the roundabouts with a lot of caution and most of the residents here do.

As frustrating as that is, I have never felt the urge to drop some oil on the roundabouts.

Tell me, if someone dropped some oil to teach them a lesson and your family was killed or injured when they also found that oil, would you see that as acceptable collateral damage?

No room for vigilante law, only ends in innocent victims, that is a lesson I learnt in my defence time deployed in a country that has a "payback" element to their community law (an eye for an eye only ends in a lot of blind people).

I understand the sentiments, but disagree wholeheartedly, and actually think this mentality is why this country is so bad in terms of people getting away with their actions - no-one is prepared to intervene; they just want to leave it to the police. Of course, if you are in a car and do some "intervention" it is immediately called road rage. If you are in public and intervene, you can be charged with assault. This world has gone PC mad, and we are paying the price. The day some common sense returns is a day I look forward to, but don't actually think it will ever happen. I don't see anything wrong with what you term "vigilante" justice - in the old days, it was called community spirit. (But OK, shooting at someone is going a tad too far).

So, I take it you would accept your family being hurt unintentionally as collateral damage then.

The problem with vigilante law (call it community spirit if you will), is it does not carry the burden of proof that our legislation does, it does not have the checks and balances to ensure guilt and it does not have effective methods to ensure the punishment does not far outweigh the crime. For example, is the causing of a crash that kills 4 youths really warranted to deal with those same youths "letting off steam" in their car? What if they are on a deserted road, doing a few doughnuts where they will not hurt anyone, is it reasonable that they cop a bullet in the side of the head?

Too true.

As is often the case, it is not the true enthusiasts that are the problem, they have too much to lose.

True competition shooters, defence members, armed security and police are not normally the offender involved in firearms offences. It is normally the want-to-be that has a firearms licence. Just as your true motoring enthusiast with a track car and a cams licence is not normally the one doing doughnuts on public roads.

So, I do agree the culprit for this incident is highly unlikely to be a "shooting enthusiast" of any real worth, but disagree that he is likely to be unlicensed and the firearm being a blackmarket special.
