Last month Volvo was left red-faced after an embarrassing incident that saw one of its new V60 wagons hit a pedestrian dummy in a safety demonstration gone wrong.

Today at the Sydney motor show Volvo Australia’s managing director Alan Desselss claimed that the problem wasn’t a failure of the car’s new pedestrian avoidance system

“Now, the reason why it failed is because of the way that the demonstration was set up, and not because of the system itself,” Desselss claims. “That’s the most important fact that everybody understands."

Lemme guess.... the dummy jumped in front of the volvo???

They used air filled dummies which needed a metal plate to be detected by the system (humans are not air filled dummies)

After a set of demonstrations they didnt put the metal plate back right

Volvo keep having these embarrassing things happen - wasn't too long ago their collision avoidance system failed in front of gathered media as well.

mercedes did this in front of the media as well, unless you are thinking of the same thing. they blamed 'interference' due to the test being done indoors.

Yes I do love how they blame it on "interference", due to it being setup to display the "advanced" characteristics of their "latest" technology in a "controlled" environment which would have been designed to "show off" this very feature.....

I think the previous test being referred to was a car slowly driving into the rear of a parked truck. Sensors should have stopped the car prior to impact.

Can't remember if it was Volvo, but it was outdoors and in front of the media.

REALLY? NHHHHHOOOOOOOOOO.

Cant blame him for stating the obvious on that one though. Its not like they have two scripts for the announcers, one if the demonstration is successful, one if it isn't. Maybe they should consider it.

Volvos arent what they used to be thats for sure and another thing id rather be in a new volvo then a falcon in a serious accident. The stigmata of the 'Bloody Volvo Driver' is long gone.

What annoys me is Volvo is at the forefront of automotive safety yet people still dig at them when something like this happens, (somewhere along the process it will)

Looks great when it works, but even in these tests, at such low speeds, they are still using inflatable cars.

Now I can see why you would'nt risk real people, but if Volvo don't even have enough faith to test their system against real cars with merely the risk of some slight panel damage, they should'nt be marketing it yet!

Guys let me tell you this technology is out there. I have driven a S60 with this feature in it. It has been demonstrated to us at HO and works.

This is the future and it wont be long before the likes of Benz and BMW start using something similar

Not knocking the technology, just the way Volvo have marketed it. If they'd acknowledged it was a developing technology that they had only managed to get to be say 95% reliable (just plucking figures from thin air here), but decided to install it now as it would still significantly increase the safety of the car compared to those that don't have it, no-one would have batted an eyelid at the odd demonstration failure.

But to come out and say "We have a car that won't crash under a certain speed" only to have it do just that was PR suicide.

Its pretty obvious (at least IMO) that they don't have a lot of faith in the system, and are well aware of statistically how often it won't work. I haven't seen any pictures of an equipped car pointed at something expensive like a Veyron. Probably too big a risk and management won't take the chance.

If they had been open about this from the start, maybe now they would be bathing in accolades for pushing the boundaries of vehicle safety, and not be viewed as the current "Nice try - but no cigar" poster boys by so much of the motoring public.
