I am doing some cheap mods this week and was wondering if it will give me any extra power;
Tickford snorkel 21/2" cat back exhaust K&N air filter Also how much would it be to get a cam and a chip? Any help would be great. |

Hi Mate the mods that you are fitting will make throttle response a bit better than what you have now as for power increase it wont be much at all might be lucky to get between 5-10kws.
Anyways if you want the thing to boogey go and get a SS induction and then get a 3"pigpipe and some pacemaker extractors then you will move a wee bit quicker but as the theory goes if you want the power and perfomance you have to spent money.

The SS one for the BA is huge, but not the one for the AU. Go for the Tickford one, heaps cheaper and very small difference in size to the AU SS one.

Ive had both the tickford and the SS snorkel and the SS made throttle response a crap load better than the cheaper unit and no i didnt pay $400 for mine as i got it off a car that had a turbo conversion done.
But alos another thing you could do as a cheap mod is go to a wrecker buy a El falcon Airbox lid and also get a BA I6 imtake pipe it gives the car a bettre take off and helps fuel rate a little better by helping the engine breathe a bit better.

Whilst air intake mods are good and can be worth doing, dont be under the impression that it will instantly make your car into a fire breathing demon. All these different intake pipes and snorkels and filters etc will all help but on a stock car Id be surprised if you noticed much of a difference at all.

The SS actually has the part to modify the bottom of the airbox to allow more air into the box. It is almost one and half times bigger than a Tickford one. You wont see any gains from it over the Tickford snorkal, unless your pulling big numbers.

I agree with you,iv'e had both and found the same,mine was a present..the debate about SS will never be settled,i'm picking there are plenty of people on here that have it and are happy......and plenty that think they are a waste.For the record the hole in the airbox gets cut out to about twice the size............

I change my shoes and I get a bigger difference in throttle response than I did from playing around with the airbox intake.
Why is there even a discussion about CAI and big mouth air intakes still? Its all crap. The tickford snorkle looks pretty. The big mouth looks tough. But thats it. If you can tell the difference these make in performance of the car by driving it your just lying to yourself to justify the spend. |

It looks cheap and buggered if I was going to advertise the SS brand compared to the genuine Ticky one :

Truth is the 80mm intake really has made no real difference at all as far as I can tell. The engine can only use so much air and the Ticky snorkle is quite easily up to the task.. even with exhaust mods and chip.

I have put the XR air snorkel on my AU Fairmont it seems to breath a bit better.
I was wondering If anyone has the part number and cost of BA air intake duct I was comparing the stock AU one with the one on my Dads BA ute and its bigger.

I am still not convinced there is any real power difference worth all the bother on an N/A motor like mine. I am not saying don't do it. If you like the look do it I did. just don't tell how much faster your car is with a new CAI setup. |
