Seriously toned down from the concept. Who was it that was claiming it would be near unchanged? 147kw and 206nm. It will be no fireball, but I guess it will be like an MX-5 where handling balance will be the key objective. They need to stuff the STi engine in it. |

Hmmm I think I prefer the concept more. They've toned it down too much.

I think its staying true to the original intention of being a 'spiritual successor' to the AE86 - light-weight, RWD, naturally aspirated four-cyl with great handling and (hopefully) at an affordable price.
...and its being aimed at the tuning crowd - there is even a 'Customizer' spec version being offered in Japan with steel wheels, unpainted bumpers, no stereo or air con and a 1190kg kerb weight!!!

The 90s supra was great … but this is just another shopping trolley … its really funny when cars made in the 90s from the same manufacturer are far better than the cars made almost 20 years later by the same manufacturer …
I still see sometimes a proper modified turbo supra that’s a real weapon even by today’s standards … but this thing just reminds me of a sports car wannabe … thank god that Nissan still knows how to build a real sports car! |

Those numbers are plenty for the purpose of the car.
Goes back to the original AE86...fitted with the just-130hp 4AGE motor and a five speed in the Sprinter version, they could use thier amazing chassis balance and suspension to run rings around bigger stuff on any road with bends. Even the 4AFE cooking models handled like champions and performaed way better than could be expected from such a cheap little Corolla hatchback. Realistically, on todays highways, and unless you're regularly going to test and tunes or street meets at the dragstrip, do you really need 300 or 400hp just to cruise around? If you do, maybe your car is too big and heavy (he says, ducking for cover... ![]() If this thing has a sweet chassis and good handling setup, it will be a gem to drive and reward the dedicated driver. It isn't the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog... |

Looks nice. I'm sure they will do a special version with some more grunt in the future.

It looks quite good! shame that the engine is lacking...something like 220kw and 400nm stock could make this car more of an option, especially seeing how light it is!

The original idea of the FT86 was to be a cheap sporty looking car with a good chassis...filling it full of exotic engineering and hanging turbos off it everywhere would defeat the purpose...at least in the lower end models.
The original AE86 was available in everything from grand-dad spec with a 4AFE and 4AC basic motors, to the Sprinter with the magnificent 4AGE in it. Plenty of people wanted the style and handling, not neccisarily blatant horsepower which is, to be blunt, becoming less relevant in today's driving in the real world anyway to the majority of drivers. |

I think with the FT86 we might...just might...be seeing a return to the days when you could buy a basic car that looked just like the hero car of the range, and then do it up or option it up if you wish. Look at the legendary HQ-shape Monaro and XA-B-C coupes...you could get them with bog basic six cylinder engines and no options, right up to GTS and GT level stuff. That way someone could get into a flash looking nicely handling car, without paying through the nose for insurance and maintainance of a high performance car. And that would be attractive to more people than you think. I remember looking at (and foolishly not buying) a HQ Monaro for sale south of Maryborough at a farm that has steel wheels and hubcaps, a 186, three speed on the column, bench seats, and the long rectangular "standard" Kingswood dash. It was as close to a "two door Kingswood" that you could get. The FT86, if priced sharply and available in all levels of spec from mild to wild, will sell like hot cakes... |
