Default 5.0 harmonic balancer

G'day guys,

Im confused on which harmonic balancer would be best regarding quality/price. It looks as though the spacer (?) behind the pulley is out of whack. Any help appreciated.

Unsure on brands but be careful what you buy as the AU one is different to other ones. I think it may also be different on the Tickford (XR) motors as opposed to the non-XR models too.

I just a had a quick look to see what varieties popped up on ebay, and the only 5.0 efi ones that i found, that were for the AUS 5.0 suited fairlanes/fairmonts. My initial guess what that they would be the same?? Any thoughts?

There what looks like some sort of rubber spacer behind the pulley which seems to be causing it to spin a little off.

What happens the Rubber between the inner and outer rings lets go, that's what you'll be seeing.

I think I paid about $220-$240 from Bursons about 2 years ago, if I was purchasing one now I'd go to Rock Auto and get one for about $50 + $90 shipping.

Aftermarket direct replacement, looks exactly the same as the ebay listing from CarsRUS

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-AU-F...item588e41184f

or Rock Auto

well, the original problem was that i think was the fan belt started squaking, but followed by a bizzare surging. So what ive done is have the fan belt, pulleys, alternator, and water pump replaced (the alternator was on its way out and i was recommended that the water pump starts to corrode from the inside out by the time the car has hit around 150000kms). So everything is off, but noticed that the rubber piece behind the pulley of the harmonic balancer is looking a little worse for wear and rotating a little off, and thought that while everything off it might be an idea to replace that if its on its way out. Although, i need the car going in this next week so i can look at it a bit later down the track. Looking at opening up the motor this coming year, so if it holds out, can do it then.

If you can see rubber sticking out from the balancer it is stuffed, basically what happens the rubber lets go between the inner and outer ring and is forced out and the rings spin and becomes unbalanced.

The surging your feeling will be from the balancer, me and a mate spent days trying to find it with my Fairlane, we stripped everything, replaced plugs and leads even the coil packs. And yes its weired.

Can you take a photo of the balancer.

as above.

thanks for the helpfull hints guys.
From my understanding, the cam synchro, in laimans terms, monitors the rotation of the cam? can someone confirm?

can someone explain to me the full operation of the harmonic balancer?

thanks heaps.

Picked up the car yesterday, and it feels as though it is running a lot better, but sometimes when at initial turn over before it is actually fired up, it sounds as though something struggling, maybe the starter??? The water pump was half corroded inside. Good call Peuty

Theres also a bizzare ticking every now and again, however, i hear the windsors are renowned for being a little weazy at times. Glad im getting maintenance done though before mods though, its a great to have the overall feeling of a car improve and makes Bruce (my cars name) a little more trustworthy

The car has surged a couple of times but not as bad as before. In the new year when i get a little $$ i'll take the ute to my regular mechanic and have him to have a look at the cam synchroniser and harmonic balancer.

thanks for the link.

No problems.

Out of interest, where did you get your pump from? Cost? Brand?
