Default Short shifters

Pro's and Cons?

And the difference between getting one of those (cheap) billet shifters from the US, i.e. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/120744706...84.m1423.l2649, as opposed to the just replacement stick that replaces the stock one, i.e. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/79-04-MUS...item45fcc66b8b

p.s. Where do i get a white cluster face replacement for AU SII XR8?

Thoughts or suggestions welcome

Ive ran these for years they prevent overshifting and damaging your syncros aswell as decreasing the shift length between gears by around 40%. They are designed and made in melbourne.

This is the same brand that I have in mine and I love it. Best thing I have ever done to the car.

The ones made in melbourne seem a little out of my price range ATM, but i definitely want a short shifter. I guess im concerned about getting one from the the US and the chances that its quality is not that great and it damages my gearbox but if it breaks its a $100 down the drain and no real dramas.

Hmm... short shifting sounds sexy though...

I've got an MGW shifter. Absolutely brilliant.
Lots of people in the states raving about them.
And only $180ish plus shipping.

If you want a cheap 'fill in' for now, remove the bush from the shift lever and cut about 40mm off the stock lever. Thats what I have done, didn't cost me a cent and made a heap of difference.

Do the MGW ones still clear the AU console ok? I thought they were the ones that didn't fit quite right?

I would suggest holding off getting anything until you can afford the Billet product, or even a ripshift. Anything else would be a waste of time. Though cutting the lever is a good idea, but it won't improve the quality of the shift at all.

I would say that you don't need to change the actual geometry of the lever itself, if anything in the AU the orange style lever would make it awkward I'd imagine.

I was thinking the silver one was a better shape, but neither creating difficulties with the shift. A straighter one would be more ideal however.

when i bought my car about a year ago it already had a steeda tri-ax short throw shifter in it. i didnt know this at the time and i was amazed at how good the gearbox felt (having never diven a stock one). i cant compare cause ive never had the opportunity to drive a ba with a stock shifter but mine feels like silk, very smooth. think there only around $180 as well. i love it compared to all other manuals ive driven.

what i meant was the shorter silver lever option from MGW as opposed from the orange lever.

Im with Puety, I have heard alot of people say that the steeda's and imports make the shift alot more effort compared to the billet products and ripshifter I wouldnt waste my money on them after using the billet quick shifter

I too have one of the ebay shifters mentioned in the first post.
I've found that it fits nicely in my Xr8 and gives you a couple of options regarding stick height, but unfortunately it does set the gear stick 2 inches further back. For some this may be ok.
I'm waiting on my mate to make up two sticks; 1 straight stick which will put the gear stick in the factory position. 2nd short top stick which is required to put the momo or original knob back on.
The stick as supplied is a 12mm thread whereas the original is a 10 mm thread.
At the moment i make do with a supercheap universal knob but this is not much chop as it requires tightening of the attaching grub screws almost daily.
Hope this gives you food for thought.

Fortunately for me, my 5 spd isn't fitted yet and i haven't driven a t5 since my ea falcon days. so position of gear stick will be somewhat new to me.
