Our government needs to grow a pair and do something about this, instead of letting aussie products being bent over. Maybe a 50% tax on all Thai utes would be a good start, taxing a few hundred thousand of them a year would help Juliar pay off all the taxpayers money they have squandered.

Just emailed my Federal member about the FTA. I emailed them about 'lost super' 18mths ago and using the ATO as a 'clearing house'. Got something in the mail, that the idea has been implemented (stage 1 of 2) with the first legislation passed, but the 2nd is about to be introduced.

I think the best thing we can do is lobby our members and highlight the inequity. ie 170,000 vehicles vs NIL and excises specifically targeted to protect the local Thai product and hurt the import competitiveness.

seems like it would be a good idea to get our Trade Guys off their backsides with a reaction plan just in case somebody starts moving deckchairs again??(if it happens) I would think South Africa would be a good market and a lot of reciprocal Trade opportunities as well?

Just imagine a like-for-like policy by the Australian Gov. You would have Toyota, Holden, Ford, Mazda, Honda and who knows who else instantly burned for their imports coming here like Hilux, Colorado, Ranger, BT, Focus, Fiesta, Civic, etc..., question is would Thailand quickly "play ball" with massive pressure from these "exporters" out of Thailand into Australia who have huge investments within Thailand? Ford alone has a new $430mill plant about to come online and it's mentioned FoA will be sourcing 3000 vehicle a month out of Thailand and growing. The combined imports would be several multiples of this per month.

So with that in mind whay would it be so hard to allow a small dribble of Territorys in the opposite direction?
Especially if Ford were only interested in selling high series Titanium that would greatly reduce numbers..

I cannot see any problem, in fact I don't understand why the Howard government didn't do anything in the first place. Car exports from Australia to Thailand would be a small pimple on the numbers coming the other way. But we're talking goverments here...were logic can be mutually exclusive.

First off those car manufacturers would crap their dacks thinking about all that work bumping up prices, watching figures fall, and profit margins with them. They'd cry would cry foul at govco long enough for either Thailand or Australia to swerve first in this political game of chicken.

It would surely make a statement though to other nations who want to pull this kind of crap with us.
