Default Widest tyre AUII Faimont.

Hello, I have 17 x 9 inch rims and 255 45 17 all round. I have sourced 265 and 275's that will fit the rims, but will they go inside the guards without scraping. Only the rear is the important one. Thanks

The only real concern is the inner guard as the wheel well narrows off on the rear

I believe TICK4D is fitting 285s to his car soon.

And Grunter did run 265s on the rear of his XR8, and 255s up front.

i currently run 18x8 with 235/40's with a +30mm hub increase on the back and it will scrub on big bumps on the outer lip of the guard , get em lipped just to be safe

Id say you will have more probs fitting 265's on front ,might damage your guards!!!

I know of one AU (IRS) running 19x10 inch rears might even be 12 I cant remember and it is low too!!!!

Cheers for your time guys. I'm quite happy with the 255's up front, it still steers perfect to the surprise of most tyre shop staff. They look nice and chunky hanging out the back to compared to a 235, but I must go fatter, if there is no need to hack the guards, and so far it looks promising.
One more quick question, what is the maximum width 40 series tyre I can put on a 9" rim. What I've read on some tyre charts indicate that I am maxed out at 255/40 17, but I used to have 225/50 16's on another car and those rims were only 6". Bigger side wall gives a bit more play for sure but I seem to think I should be able to fit a 275 or 285 on there safetly. All going well I'll post some pics when they go on.

I think you should be right with a 275 tyre on your 9" rims.
I had 275x35 on my 17x8.5 simmons rims on the back of my EB.(255 on the front)

Thanks all you guys for your time. I was wondering if I backed the car up on 1 ramp and had a look at the clearances that would give a rough idea of what would fit.(I have IRS.) I've pretty much got my mind set on the 275 for the bum, but are still a little unsure.

Driving the front up on 1 ramp worked best, had only about 25mm of rubber showing between the rim and the guard. I could slide my hand all the way round with my knuckles only scraping at the rear, where the inner guard narrows off as mentioned by buickman earlier.

They are on, and haven't heard any scraping yet, and thay are fat. I went with the 275's in the end, and they had no problems wacking them on a 9" rim. I'll post some pics if there's any interest.

I have 245's mounted on 18" with standard XR suspension and my front right guard has been caught out going up a driveway...
