OK so I am planning an extended holiday in Tassie within the next couple of weeks and would like to take my Alfa down with me to work on.
Currently it is unregistered and has no rego. Now in VIC I can get a temp permit to drive it to Point A to Point B to get work done, and I have done so before without a worry. What happens if Point B happens to be in Hobart? Is it simply seeing what laws Tasmania has (??), maybe another permit there? I have looked at enclosed transport and the best quote I can find is around $1200...Ive calculated that it would cost me around $500 to drive it myself including Ferry etc Anyone done an interstate drive before with such a scenario?

Typically the permit needs to be based on the state the trip 'started' in.
but you'll need to check up on Tassie's laws to be sure. especially since theres a big chunk of water in between, crossing state borders isnt quick as simple :P the above was certainly the case when i purchased my wagon from NSW unregistered.

As far as I understand the Vic temp permit doesnt actually ask you where you are going, well when I got one a few months back they didnt ask IIRC.
So when you picked up yours in NSW you got a permit just for NSW?

from vicroads website.
Interstate use You can drive interstate with an Unregistered Vehicle Permit if this condition is specified on your permit. You do not need a permit from VicRoads if your journey starts interstate and finishes in Victoria. Check with your local vehicle registration authority if you need an interstate permit before you drive.

here ya go:
from http://www.transport.tas.gov.au/regi...vehicle_permit What if I am moving a vehicle from interstate to Tasmania? Where a vehicle is being relocated and the starting point for a journey is located in another State or Territory a permit will need to be issued by that jurisdiction. Where an unregistered vehicle is being brought to Tasmania from interstate for an approved event as stated above a Short Term Permit must be purchased from the jurisdiction that the vehicle leaves from and in addition a Tasmanian will need to be purchased to participate in the event.

The permit in Victoria will not cover a holiday type trip with the vehicle. It will cover getting the vehicle to a place for repairs etc for the purpose of making the vehicle fit for registration. There are other conditions too which can be found on the permit.

So if I was taking it to someone who can work on it with me aswell? A shop? Do I need to nominate a place?
When I say holiday, it could be for a month or even until Christmas..see how it pans out. Should point out its not a pile of poo, its very close to RWC and I drove it around melbourne last time with no issues, also fully insured etc. I am technically fixing things to get it on the road.

Get a 'Temp' permit for VIC and a 'Temp' permit for TAS.
That way - you should be covered either way. Covered to drive the car to the docks (to sail it across) and covered to drive in Tassie (for a period of time). One thing you will need to work out is - if you're driving it to Tassie to get 'repairs' done, are you planning on registering the car in TAS (if you stay till xmas) because I'm pretty sure they don't allow (or don't like) repeat permits for the same thing. And if you're gonna register it in VIC, you'll need to get it back to VIC for RWC/Reg reasons. Have you looked in the the rules and laws for cars with Club Reg? That might be a more viable alternative - for driving the car in both states for an unspecified amount of time.

You can get all the paperwork you want but the first cop that pulls you over isnt going to care.
There is NO legit reason for your car needing repairs in Tassie that couldnt be done in the state of Vic - thats going to be your biggest problem and no amount of excuses or argument is going to get you around that. Either register the vehicle (you said its basically RWC anyway) or dont take it. The permit system doesnt exist for you to drive your car on your holidays. Abuse and we will all lose it. BTW, i got a permit yesterday and was questioned what i wanted it for. |

I thought in Vic. after you've had two permits things get a bit more complicated if you need to go for a third? Check up on what (if anything) that involves.

Fine for an unregistered car down here is $200 for the car not being registered and a further $200 for having no Maib cover. ( I got done last week, completely slipped my mind. Had no idea what the cop was pulling me over for until he had a good look at my rego sticker. )

Ok so this is what you do.
You get a permit in Victoria. The reason you are going to tassie is to deliver the car to a buyer. While in tassie the sale falls through. Get a friend who lives in tassie to say they wanted to buy the car. Car goes back to Melbourne all good. The Vic permit will cover all states. |

If was going to buy a car in NSW, before you can get the permit you have to take the car to a RWC for inspection, so you'd have to muck around getting the buyer to do a RWC for you. PITA

Might want to check out your insurance too - not sure if they cover you when the car isn't 'registered' and a permit is not registration.
So - personally you're opening way to many cans of worms for not a lot of gain.

Thanks for the input and concerns guys.
I asked my insurer, Shannons, and they were fine with me driving around in Melb (it was a 1.5hr round trip) so I dont think I have an issue there. If they are worried about people "abusing" the system then why give a permit for a full month? Just make it for that day or trip? I legitimately do have a family member who is a mechanic in Tas, and when I say holiday there is a good chance we are relocating until Christmas (I find out next week)...so its not like I am just popping down. Seems a call to VicRoads and the Tas Transport guys is in order. eyes87 whats a Maib cover?

Just to update this thread with some correct info if someone else wants to do the same.
OK firstly, anyone wanting to drive a car from VIC to TAS on a unregistered vehicle permit is ok to do so. You dont need one for VIC and one for TAS just the VIC one which allows you to drive to your destination. (Dont kow if its different for other states). I double checked with the lady at the counter and told her my plans and all is good, so I have the permit ready to go and changed my insurance to suit.

I've done Victoria to Adelaide on permits, the maximum time per permit is 28 days, which they gave me ' in case I broke down', great leway to get inspected and SA rego'd!

I bought my eb in vic and drove it back to qld on a week permit. The seller arranged it and stuck it to the windscreen. Wasn't till i got home and removed the permit that i read the bit that was folded over, 6am to 6pm. I drove through the night and half a day and the next night to get home.
Didn't get pulled up but I'll be reading the fine print in future. Qld permits don't have this restriction so i assumed i was good to go, had just caught 3 planes to get there.

I think the fee for a 28 day permit in Vic is around $90 bucks. It covers everything that your rego covers. |

Correct. I paid $88 for mine, and that was for a heavy vehicle!
Money well spent, thanks Vicroads ;) |

Polyal,
I did the opposite. That is I drove an unregistered car from Hobart to Melbourne (I'd Sold it). All i had to do was get a permit in Tas. Mind you they needed to know every detail of the journey and there could be no deviations from that. Spoke to Vic roads and according to them I was covered by the Tassie permit. All I had to say was it was for relocation purposes. So it should work in reverse for you? I should add that this was 12 months ago as well.
