Default GRNKPR Gets Called A Track Whore

I love Winton. I was up there last weekend with the Honda Sports Car Club – every thing from Rotary powered Escorts, BMW M3R’s, 350Z’s, Hondas (including an NSX), Porsche 993, Ferrari 360 Modena to a Monaro CV8R.

What “unofficial” times was everyone doing? I did a 1:44.14 (1:43’s are next, my car has already done a 1:43.7 with someone else driving it on “slower” RE540s) in my DC2R Integra (stock except for brake pads, brake lines, brake fluid and Bridgestone RE55s), the Porsche has done 1:37s, one of the 350Z’s did 1:41.25 with me as a passenger (he has done a 1:40.6 solo).

I can brake a bit deeper than the 350Zs but they are way more stable and secure in to and out of corners (even without traction control) and I need way more grunt. I think that I’ve got the sweeper, the “squirt” and the esses pretty nailed – the others corners still need a bit of work. I also may need to look at some suspension mods as I was 3 wheeling at “tank” (turn after the sweeper) and the esses. The John Bowe course is very good for improving your times around Winton.

This guy was doing 1:45s or thereabouts in his street-tyred 350Z but his lines are pretty good (the Civic that flys by is a full on race car with a very good driver).

Hi Grnkpr

A few of the guys have got simple lap timers so my times are “good”. They really are a boon on these “fun” days as I get an absolute time, the readout is “live” as I go past the timing beacon and I immediately see the benefit/hinderance from different lines, braking points, etc. I suspect that I might be better under brakes and in some of the corners than your Falcon but that you would absolutely slaughter me on the straights. According to Motor magazine’s car of the year laptimes (with Cam McConville driving) you are mixing it with Nissan 350Z track, Porsche 911 Carrera, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6, HSV GTS, Subaru STi, Lotus Elise and Mercedes CLK55 AMG. Some very quick cars indeed!

It would be nice to have your torque – I was undecided for ages about what gear to use for the squirt (short bit between the end of the back straight and the start of the new front straight that goes past the V8 pits). 2nd is a bit too low and 3rd is a bit too high and I don’t have the torque to really pull hard coming on to the straight. In the end I had to leave it in 2nd and change up at 8300/8400 when I am coming on to the start of the straight. And when I change in to 4th (Just at the end of the long straights and just before I go in to the sweeper) I wouldn’t get anywhere near the shove in the back that you get.

Come out to the HSCCV days some time – reasonably expensive, no timing, not that many cars but heaps of track time – I probably had about an hour of track time (6 x 10 minute sessions), a good spread of cars (including a small number of ricers) without any autosnobs. Let us see how a real V8 performs.

I can’t wait to get my “real” track car finished – Datsun 240Z fitted with a Ford 302 Windsor and running slicks. Hopefully it will combine most of my current handling and braking with some of your engine power and be quick on the track. If it combines my current power with 1971 levels of handling I will be in the s**t.

On the days When the xr xy club hire the track i got about 3 hours on track time as they have 20 30 entrants and you can go out as you please .its a bit of a trap as no one is lining up to go out so you think i will have another 8 lap dash this is when the car feels it . so you dont get sucked in i cool car down come back in pits have a look around and then back into it
