Hello.
I wouldn't touch a Holden with a ten foot pole. My wife wants to figure out what car is in this old photo. And I wouldnt be caught dead posting on a Holden forum just to find out. I would appreciate some help. Cheers. Last edited by Elbow_grease9; 02-11-2012 at 08:36 PM. |

It’s a pony showing an unnatural interest in a shepherd that's not having a bar of it.
Got no idea about the car. |

Hi,
It's a Premier front on it ( twin headlights ), looks like either HJ,HX or HZ. I'm leaning towards HX, because the HZ had over riders on the bumper. HJ had chrome horizontal bars on the grille, HX had silver vertical bars, and HZ had silver square holes. ( by silver I mean satin silver plastic) Shame the car is in the shade, otherwise it would be easy. I had a 1976 HX Premier for a couple of years in between Falcons..... |

HX/HZ Premier...wagon by the look of it I think.
Great car, and still with that basic HQ shape and a feature that no new car has..."the thinnest A-pillars of any production car"... But yes...could be anything from a HQ onwards to WB (although there were no "WB" Kingswoods, Premiers, or wagons...just utes and vans, and the Stateman of course)...I nearly bought a complete front end from a HX Premier to put on our WB ute, but it was a bit out of my budget. They're all interchangeable. |

HX wagon given the roof racks and grille. Fenders are HJ-HZ GTS. Could be HQ-WB as suggested but tend to think its a genuine HX because of the roof racks.

Not a HZ because if it was you would clearly see the red lion badge at the top of the grill, also the square check grill pattern would be very obvious. So it is either a HJ or HX Premier (twin headlights) wagon with a factory roof rack.
It is hard to tell because the grill has been blacked out though but the HX does have very prominent vertical fins in the grill that stand out over the horizontal fins while the HJ has very thin (fine) for Premier but slightly thicker for Kingswood horizontal lines only. If you look carefully there is some evidence of vertical fins (although I think they should be more obvious) but it does not look quite right for a HX however I think that the lines really need to be finer to be a HJ Premier, so I am guessing that whatever it is, it might have had a replacement HJ Kingswood grill at some point in its life. Also as others have already pointed out but also from the popular 80's "mid night blue" paint job and hotwire mags, it could easily be a bitsa anyway. Do you know what era the pic is from? Bud Bud |

It could be anything from HQ to HZ wagon, with premier front clip and sill covers.
One of the great things about thses cars is the ability to mix and match bodies, front suspension and hanging panels. They were prone to cracking the Y frame, but you could unbolt and roll out and replace the whole front end in a weekend. I had a mint HX kingswood 253 auto years ago with afore mentioned cracks, picked up an old HX wagon with 253 4sp, good Y frame and GTS dash for $500. Swapped the dash and oil pressure sender, Y frame and 4sp in a weekend. Was a nice car, went ok for a little 8. Those were the days, we lived in Maitland on the Yorke Peninsula and a group of us had between us a HQ Prem 308, HQ SS 253, HJ Prem 253, my HJ GTS 253 and my HX Kingy 253, made for some cool cruising and photo shoots down the beach. |
