Transferring car into my name

Hey guys, I bought my EL Fairmont Ghia about a year ago now, and I've been slowly getting it ready for a roadworthy, its going in for some final work in the next few weeks, then going for its roadworthy. I was given some forms by the original owner, from VicRoads, but I lost them ages ago.

I still have the reciept he gave me for it though, what are those forms for? It asked for VIN, kilometers etc, is it just a case of getting another form and filling it out?

I bought the car unregistered.

As you have the reciept for it and it having no reg when bought all you need to do is take it in for a roady

If it passes the roady then you will be issued with new plates

FYI - Registration is not 'ownership' of the car anyways.

So - technically so long as you have a signed Bill of Sale (signed by previous owner, and you) then you own the car.

You'll need a Bill of Sale to prove ownership of the car when you register the car (with the current RWC also).

Its pretty straight forward, and lots of people make it way more complicated than it actually has to be.

Does the car have to go to the VicRoads workshop?

That means Broadmeadows, car will probably get stolen the moment I take the key out of it, lol.

I've got a small piece of paper saying mow much I bought it for with both our names and signatures on it.

Requirements to register a light vehicle
The registration requirements for a light vehicle are:

you must be over 17 years of age to register a car or truck or 17 years and 9 months of age for a motorcycle or motor trike
you can only register a vehicle in the name of a person or incorporated body (see: Who can register a vehicle you must attend an appointment at VicRoads
you may need to attend a vehicle inspection at VicRoads (if the vehicle has previously been registered in your name and the vehicle details have not changed, you do not need to attend a vehicle inspection)
you must pay registration and number plate fees.

Make an appointment
To make a registration appointment:

call us on 13 11 71 (Visa or MasterCard payments only)
visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre (cash, cheque, EFTPOS, Visa or MasterCard)

When making an appointment you will need to tell us the:

vehicle identification number (VIN) /chassis number
engine number
registration plate number (if applicable)

Cancelling or changing your appointment
If you want to change an appointment you will need to pay another appointment fee. The inspection fee can be transferred to a new time or cancelled with a refund if you give us 24 hours notice.

The appointment and vehicle inspection
The safest way to legally drive an unregistered vehicle to your appointment is with an Unregistered Vehicle Permit (UVP).


What you need to bring to the appointment

the vehicle (if an inspection is required)
evidence of identity
evidence of purchase (contract of sale/receipt showing the VIN; engine number; name, address and signature of previous owner; name and address of the new owner).
a current Certificate of Roadworthiness
Evidence of Victorian garaged address. Must provide one of the following as evidence,
- A Victorian residential or business address. If the postal address differs from the residential or business address, evidence of that must also be provided
- An interstate or overseas residential or business address plus secondary evidence of identity that provides documentary evidence linking the vehicle operator to the Victorian garaged address (eg. rate notice, utility bill etc.)
- An RMB (Road side mailbox) or RSD (Road side delivery) if the residence or business cannot be identified by a street/road name or other means
if someone else is attending the appointment on your behalf, they will need a signed letter of authority from you that quotes your Victorian licence number.

Fees
Our fee calculator can estimate the total cost of registering your vehicle. If you supply evidence that the vehicle was previously registered in your name you do not need to pay motor vehicle duty.


Number plates
Your new number plates must be fitted before driving. Screws are not supplied with new plates.

The previous plate numbers may be reissued if you were the last registered owner. Number plate fees will still apply. If it is more than 12 months since your registration expired, your previous plate numbers may have been given to someone else. If not, the previous plate numbers can be reissued as custom plates (at an additional charge).

Yes all cars need to be sighted when transferring them. They check the the vin and engine number and give the car a once over.

i bought my car unregistered got a roadworthy booked an appointment a vicroads the lady came out to the car looked at the engine and vin numbers then got the car registered the don't inspect the car as that is all done in the roadworthy.
