I agree, I'd think if public servants were forced to go for a local product and it was a Ford the ecoBoost would be the better choice. Many PS and fleet controllers for government I have spoken to do not like using LPG cars.

I suspect Cruze might be a leading choice though being a smaller car unless Ford can prove that the ecoBoost Falcon is cheaper to maintain.

Does Ford Australia and Holden really want to be car makers that Australian's are forced to buy?

Maybe this will actually do bad things for the image of Australian made cars. Ford and Holden both make good products, forcing people to buy them isn't really the path we want to head down.

We live in a capitalist country. People should be free to buy what they want.

Really?

Maybe you should look up the ideals and philosophies of capitalism and socialism and then compare them to Australia in 2012. You want to revise your statement.

That’s not the issue. It’s the veggie patch mentality of governments deciding on what cars the government fleet is made up of.

This happens in the private sector as well. A mate of mine used to work for Fuji-Xerox and one of their main customers was Toyota. Toyota’s attitude was, we buy your printers, you buy our cars, except their cars were crap and didn’t suit the job they were required to do. It wasn’t until someone grew a pair and decided that Commodore wagons were the go. It probably put a few noses out of joint, but that’s business and really, WGAF what the knobs at Toyota think? They still purchased Xerox printers because they were one of the best.

Our governments, from my understanding don’t owe anyone favours, so they should be looking after local industries first, and that should mean buying locally.

Australians are not being forced to buy the cars, but the bloody Government should be forced too, by the will of the people,
After all they should be doing what is best for the people and the country not themselves

Flappist, I dislike the current government just as much as the next person. But to stay Australia is anything but a capitalist country is a long shot.

To everyone else, correct me if I'm wrong but when I read the article it said they wanted to force those salary sacrificing in the public service. This is different to managers chosing to buy Australian cars, which they should. However I don't agree with forcing private buyers when salary sacrificing to buy a certain make of car just because they work for the public service.

Well I just got off my posterior and politely emailed the ACT Chief Minister asking her to buy AU only cars. I cant believe Ive seen Klugers and Hyundais sporting 'ACT Government' plates. There is no reason those cars couldnt have been Cruzes or Territorys.

as mentioned previously, vic state government does preference australian made cars for its red plate fleet, look at the amount of camry's, commodores etc used, camrys are the main vehicle due to the hybrid option . even the vic roads marked partol cars are commodores, falcons & terries...
falcons are making a rare comeback as well as the cruze
these are normally purchased in low numbers so that fuel & service / resale costs can be evaluated in the short term.
part of the reason why the prius is no longer purchased was because of poor resale, crampt & the arrival of the camry hybrid ( vic made & green status )
the only time they look outside of this policy is if the local cars will not suit the job then a request is made to purchase outside of the policy ( ie mercedies vans as bongo vans for police, prados for vic roads, etc)
hilux & navaras for towing etc...

the new policy idea would olny apply to salary sacrifice purchases for gov employees & is nothing new, it was in place years ago & infact labour opened up the choices & began to allow imported cars..
