I notice a couple of weeks ago on my bike, that I could smell fuel from the exhaust. But it had a different smell to it, I thought it might have something to do with drilling holes in my air box lid. Then a bloke from work said that he could smell the fuel from his bike as well. Now I just went and filled up the XW and yep I can smell the same smell again. But when I start the XW in the shed there was no smell, but I hadn't put petrol in that car for a few months. It was only after I filled it, oh yeah it's been BP 98.

Haven't BP made changes to petrol of recent times ... so it's not so "desirable" to drink to some people. I think this might be the case. As it also change the "aromatic" properties to it as well.

I'm currently living in an aboriginal community in the NT and they have BP Opal, which is a non sniffable fuel because petrol sniffing is a problem up here, rather than drinking. But it is specifically branded separately to normal fuel, and as far as I know, only used up here.

The oil company's have a summer formula and a winter formula for petrol but I don't think you would notice a difference in the smell > but who knows.

I guess there is going to be a sudden increase in the number of Ford drivers sniffing petrol.

I believe (and will verify later):
The smell is artificially added to the fuel. Without it it would be harder to detect leaks. Different types and grades are given different smells to help differentiate. |
