Your not going to bow a 16mm plate mate. No prob there. And thats way overkill. But its easy for me to aquire the metal and I have the gear to move it whenever I want. If you want to be able to move it around your own shed you could easily fit castors on a cam setup

I have a four poster that came with wheels on a lever system so you could move it. Now the trick, you still have to bolt it down to use it so making the fact you can move it basically useless anless you bolt down mounts that you can bolt it too. That would be my advice put some mounts in where you want to use it than fabricate a structure to move it around and bolt down before use. The answer to your original question is yes you can do it, but I wouldnt use it or let anyone else under it.

Looks like I will have to proof load what I am doing just to calm the crowd.
The whole idea is not to bolt it down. Everyone stay calm, guarantee you all the car will fall off the hoist before the hoist falls over.

I agree if balanced on the hoist the thing wont fall over, its when you try and lever those bloody front end bolts off that you apply 100-150KG extra moment of inertia on one end then it nose dives, bang, then the hoist slips out backwards then bang again then rear end comes down, another bang. followed by a lung collapsing uuuurrrgh.
Looking at the sketch the center of gravity is so high and it olny needs to move a a small distance in either direction to cause it to overbalance. However outriggers as you have mentioned will prevent the toppling and minimise the plate thickness requirements Please get some video! JP Last edited by jpblue1000; 10-02-2013 at 03:59 PM. Not just you charliewool but I've notice a few people spelling jail the amercian way (gaol). Look has something change in Australian schools or something. Off subject I know but when ever I read it spelt that way, I first read it as goal and not jail.

That's funny I was always taught at school to spell jail that way, I only became aware of the other way when I got older. I'm 40 at the moment so don't know if it's a new thing or not. Your probably right but wasn't the way I was taught.

Some of the engineering thoughts put forward is quite interesting as well (including calcs). Still trying to work out how the whole thing will tip when the plate will extend beyond the lift arms as in post #20. Any load that is applied at say the extreme front of the car will be predominantly downwards (weight of the person pulling on the wrench). If it was going to tip, it would tip off the hoist lift arms first.

I am 45 and was taught gaol. English being such an organic language jail was adopted by most. Gaol (gayhole) being the formal british way. We like the yankee way here. Like labour Party. Labor is how its spelt but Labour party wanted to distance itself from british rule so went all yankee on itself.
Glad we cleared this up. Should help heaps in reaching the gaol of building this hoist base. Or is that goal? Now I am all confused. Thanks XBROO!

I have been working out the procurement etc (lets call it a SWMS and keep the inspectors here happy)
The only issue I see is if you need a clear floor set up. Getting the transmission trolley/jack onto the plate needs some thought. A ramp of sorts maybe. And also the fact our cars are mostly low you would suffer even more trying to get the hoist arms under if your wheels are on the concrete still. No issue really, just throwing it out there for the likes of my_gxl who is getting ideas Otherwise all good

That sketch is good, but i'd be worried about it toppling over. I'd extend the base as long as the car itself and add box beams along each side for strength. That could then have a beam from the corner to the top of the hoist for strength.

^^ too big for transport. And way over engineered.
I dont know what some of you think we are lifting. Its just a car on a ****y little two poster. You can bolt these things to a 50mm slab if you add a slightly larger base plate that is supplied when required.
