Yeah...

I thought you'd know that

There is a dirty great big taxi fitout place somewhere in Victoria where they even get the common taxi yellow paint.

Heaps of taxis are bought brand new, the first ECOLPIs I saw when they were released were taxis.

Speaking of Melbourne, I know someone down there who has picked up a brand new Chrysler 300 for 38 grand. A strong dollar and weak Europe sales saw Chrysler Australia pick up a cheap shipment.

Not always, last time I went to the auctions all the white and silver FG XT's were being bought up by taxi operators.

Starting to see a lot of hybrid Camry taxis here in Melbourne.

And the last FG cab that I was in a couple of weeks back was an XR6. As others have said, most operators buy at auction & then repaint them in yellow. Wouldn't suprise me if they were buying damaged ones as well.

They were advertised for this price in the paper a few weeks ago. However, I believe they were 2012 builds, so it's not a bargain because you can get a brand-new 2013 for $43k.

XR6s are rare because they have a much higher resale value so it's not economical for the taxi operators to buy them 2nd hand (also a lot are bought privately, so wouldn't come up for sale at auction as often).

Ex-rental hybrid Camrys are the cab of choice now. They are much cheaper to run, and Toyota warrants the batteries for something like 8 years even as a cab.

Speaking of taxis, some interesting info:

The last Fairlane taxi will be retired in May 2014 (2015 in regional areas)
Last BF Falcon sedan: October 2014 (2015 regional)
Last Falcon wagon taxi: May 2017 (2018 regional)
Last Falcon taxi, period: ~2023 (assuming production ends in 2016)

saw 4..yes 4 Taxi G6Es in a row in Brisbane city near Roma Street the other day. 2 silver and 2 black. They where silver service taxis tho.....but we saw a camry hybrid silver service on the way home...and laughed out loud at how ridiculous it looked in silver service colours.

what did you find amusing? i'm no camry lover, but i'm sure they do the job required with ease. if the fact they are hybrids is amusing, its interesting to note that ford have some of the best hybrid cars in their line up, they just choose not to sell them in australia... unfortunately. perhaps that will change in the future.

i'm not 'pro hybrid' but its a good vehicle to have in your arsenal as it paints a very critical picture to the general public.
