Default CHRYSLER is recalling 469,000 Jeep four-wheel drives

I don't know if this has been posted but if it has by all means mods give it the bullet.

http://www.news.com.au/business/brea...-1226640060150

CHRYSLER is recalling 469,000 Jeep four-wheel drives worldwide because they can shift into neutral without warning on startup.
The recall affects 2005 to 2010 Grand Cherokees and 2006 to 2010 Commanders.
US safety regulators say cracks in a circuit board can cause a faulty signal as the 4WDs are being started. If the vehicles shift into neutral they can roll away.
Chrysler says the problem has caused 26 crashes and two injuries.
Chrysler will notify owners and dealers will update software to take care of the problem. Chrysler found cracks in a circuit board that turns the four-wheel-drive system on and off.
Repairs will be made at no cost.
The recall covers 295,000 vehicles in the US, 28,500 in Canada, and 4,200 in Mexico. The remaining 141,000 are outside North America.

Wouldn't you have your park brake on still??

Not everybody uses a handbrake.

Especially on the Chryslers, it's a foot brake. I don't use mine and I use a remote start system.

So you hold the car on the transmission when you park?

I make a distinct effort NOT to put any load on the transmission

I only use it if I'm not parked on a flat surface which is rare.

Either this doesn't mean the ones on Oz or the ACCC are behind the times as they've only heard about the airbag problem....

Jeeps hand brakes have never worked well in 60 years anyway

All jeep owners know not to trust a handbrake especially off road

Jeeps have proper handbrakes. Not like the 300c.
My jeep handbrake worked fine and I used it all the time.

I never used to use my foot park brakes on my 300c on flat. but a few weeks ago it unexpectedly roll forward while in park, and broke the release lock. I was the. Stuck in park.
From now on I always use my park brake no matter how flat it looks.

It's a legal requirement to apply the vehicle's parking brake when parked and unattended,
if the parking pawl fails in the gearbox for any reason and you don't have the brake applied,
you could be in the soup big time...

It's not brain surgery...I bought a jeep!

Haha....they make me laugh as I wait for them to inch their way over Sydney speed bumps as they take their share of the road on the way to get a latte before picking up the children from daycare.

You bought a jeep?

I assume you mean "bought" a Territory. Regardless, they are two different vehicles.

Still not good for Jeep's reputation though.

Don't really ever use the handbrake on my Volvo. 350,000km and the pawl hasn't broken, go figure... A steep hill I will put load on the handbrake first sure but not usually.

I was just taught to put the car into park and use the handbrake or footbrake.

Like getting into the car, put seatbelt on. It's a habit.

I rarely use the park brake myself unless on an incline, from what little I've seen of the parking detent on the few ford autos ive seen on the inside they look a pretty stout.

Sounds like 90% of SUV owners in the city no matter what car they own. For all I know you could be describing a typical Ford Territory owner.

Im confused? Is it an issue with the 4WD mechanism disengaging the transmission/transfer allowing it to roll, or the auto pawl for Park?

If they have found cracks in a circuit board why the hell are they only doing a software update that will do jack to fix the problem they need to replace the board

Sorry mate didn't mean to muddy the waters, some one mentions something and in my senility I'm off with the fairies, I think it is electronics that control the park locking mechanism, something like my old toyota you have to engage the foot brake to pull it out of park , but it must do a bit more than that in the jeeps case as it can go into nuetral.
