Hi. Regulation also seems to stop at the edge of the greater metropolitan area and the further away the less competition and higher price structures. Cheers MD

Ok towing fees when you have a break down or a smash are high, what about towing a car from A to B just moving it to another house due unable to start and you only want it moved so you can begin restoring it??? More of transporting it.

Same prices i presume??

Probably not, you are negotiating in advance rather than being taken advantage of on the spot.

RACV premium membership gets me towed from Melbourne to Geelong unlimited times every year (100 km from home)....and it is in addition to any warranty tow.

best 175 bucks a year you can spend I reckon....

BUT...in an accident that's 300 bucks and the breakdown service will not tow me.

The other problem is they lockup your car in their "safe" yard.

You are held to ransom, if they don't get the panel work they charge you daily storage.

All well and good if your insurance company is paying...but if not...it's big $$$$

Why would it be the same, you can negotiate a deal, I was getting my project towed around to panel beater, spray painter, engine shop etc etc for $50 flat rate tow on a tilt tray, pre arranged days before and done at the towies leisure.

Getting towed from an accident scene in peak hour or at 2am on a Sunday morning will obviously cost more.

In NSW tow tucks that tow from accident scene must have a TT plate same as a Taxi plate, this plate is worth thousands, the driver must be licensed (more Money and fees), and must abide by legislation, then it must consider the fact that the tow truck owner has to pay someone 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year to man the truck. Maintain the truck etc etc. when half or more of the time it's just sitting around doing nothing just so someone who has an accident can call a tow truck at 1am in New Years day and someone will turn up.

I don't really think a few hundred $$ is too much to pay for that convenience.

It is when the towie claims off road salvage fees for taking a car is half on a roundabout, adds time to the tow, adds the km from their yard to the tow when they can only charge excess kms on the way from the tow, and then to top it off uses an unlicensed driver.

It was only going to cost me about $250 to get my GMC Sierra 50km through the local towing company, I was sneakily trying to get it home without telling my parents while they were at work, because I knew they would object. Then I let Dad borrow my car for the day and he saw the $12,600 final payment slip in my car which i left on the seat....

So I just organised a workmate to bring it home after I got blasted, saved me $250.

well yeah but no

can be pretty sure u will pay triple 4 a towie u patronise on a whim at a prang in league w/ cops

keep a list of towies on u mobes is my main point

still cheaper to sort the repair from home, even if 2x tows, than be beholden to a repairer

Yeah, you don't have to use an accident tow truck to move your car either, just a normal tilt tray will be fine. Some tow guys don't do accident work, and specialise in towing project cars around just shop around.

Guy I was using in Sydney was charging me $50 cash in hand, he used to do my tow between other jobs for pocket money.

I think $80-120 would be more common depending on how far you need to move it.

You pretty much explained the problem there. Does not mean the genuine operators are all bad.

Do your homework when using a tow truck or use you insurance approved one, ask questions and most of all check licensing and towing authority before signing up for a tow.

Get them to tow the car and drop it of at your worst enemies house. Do not pay the bill. Easy.

i joined NRMA only because i had to get towed in my old EB 3 times in 1 year, I have had it for 10 years now and had to get towed last year but apart from that never use them but least its piece of mind.
and if your car is undrivable from an accident i though you just told the towie who you are insured with and they take your car to the insurers approved yard and the insurer pays the lot weather your at fault or not.
p.s. i saw a decent accident yesterday (tee bone) and car with front damage had to be towed as it had radiator damage but the vp commodore it hit in the side was fine apart from slightly damaged doors but they towed it. i would have driven it home
