I actually like the 'Targa Top' though think of it more from Pontiac Trans Am / Corvette with the bar in the middle??
I suppose it required similar engineering to convertible - so if you're gonna have a topless car - may as well go all the way? Its kinda more than a Sunroof - but less than a Ragtop...

T-top has a bar in the centre
It seems like modern sports cars have twin roll over bars behind the seats so the rear pillar/window structure of the targa roof is no longer necessary for roll-over protection. Convertibles are using retracting hardtops, sedans are using panoramic sunroofs.

Sales numbers I guess plus manufacturing volume would be uneconomic except in the luxury market targeting your average Florida resident.

Very time consuming... Usually manually removed then stowed in boot, which also hogged all your boot space.
Compared to the 1 button retract ragtops of today which fold into their own compartment.

The targa top fell off somewhere around the 80s and got stuck. If you turn back, you might be able to find it. Gosh, I can't imagine why they are not still popular. Was that the yellow Porsche in Commando?

I reckon they're awesome, mainly because they still look like a hard top when you put the roof back on! I dislike the look of some particular rag tops..

I guess it's because guys no longer have mullets to show off then the targa top became useless. Because they died around the same time.
Coincidence? |

I have a new jeep with a sort of targa top. Called a freedom top of something in the marketing BS. Can't say I use it. Too much effort to put on and off.

One of the big problems with targa tops and soft tops is that you lose body rigidity. Then if you do jumps or even turn into steep driveways the whole car twists and the doors start to wobble around and the whole car ends up being loose and creaky. Similar thing happens to a lesser degree in 2+2's because the doors are too long. Much better off win a four door sedan.

Manufacturers don't just lop the roof of and hope for the best, they actually beef up the chassis to compensate for the loss of strength from the roof. As for a 4-door v's 2...
