If I wanted to move an unregistered car from Vic to NSW would I need a UVP from Vicroads or the RMS (RTA)?
Both sites say that cars can be moved interstate with a UVP but I can't find out online if I need one for the state your going to, or coming from. I know I can, and probably will, call the RMS but knowing the wait on the phone I was hoping that someone here has done this.

Get it from Vic.
If you get one from NSW you need to supply a pink slip to get it. You might as well get a blue slip and register it then. As far as I know in Vic you just get one. |

The permit is obtained from VIC Roads and can all be arranged (and paid for)
over the phone. The permit will cover the vehicle for a period of time, and for travel from the VIC address of the purchase location to the home address of the destination in NSW. The route taken must be direct, with travel only in the day and the permit displayed on the dash. The vehicle does not have any plates attached. Refer website link: http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...iclePermit.htm

I brought a truck down from far North NSW to Vic on a permit and I was ok to drive at night. I used another permit recently and it was daytime only as it was within Victoria. The lady at Vic Roads told me that if it was used interstate you can drive at night. Make sure you double check though, and yes, get a Vic permit. Steven |

I've done this a few times and the permit needs to be obtained in the state of Origin. So in your case Victoria.
The silly thing is every state has slightly different rules and not all permits are valid in all states which is just absurd given we are one country. It defys belief that in 2014 it is still every state for themselves. |

Brilliant, thank you.
5 replies in the time it would have taken me to go through the RMS menu on the phone.

Do you mind giving details of where the permits aren't valid so no one gets caught out.

Rather than risk it, I got an ACT permit, got a NSW pink slip at an ACT garage that does rego checks for both states, drove across to Queanbeyan RTA to get an unregistered vehicle permit for the trip to Goulburn. |

I bought a car in VIC and drove it to NSW (home). Got a VIC permit because it was so much easier.
This actually caused me grief when the petrol station wouldn't sell me any fuel, even showing them the permit. I basically argued with them until they called the owner who agreed to sell $20 max.

Go in there to ask a question, ask 3 different people the same question and get three different answers, then go in on another occasion and get another different answer to the same question from the same person as last time. |
