Default AU Falcon muffler replacement

Hi,
our AU has a hole in the big muffler in the middle. I notice on ebay you can get the middle piece which is like two mufflers connected by a pipe, part no. M3869. It looks like a fairly simple bolt off bolt on job to me, has anyone experienced any hassles doing this?

Thanks.

Nup.... Should only take 1 hour or so to get the old system off, and the new one on...

Are you only replacing the center muffler ? if so it's normally a pain in the butt to remove rear section without damaging it. you would be better off replacing from the cat back , & its also a perfect oppertunity to upgrade to a 2 1/2 " system - better note & better fuel economy , not much more $ either

It depends on how they join. Sometimes they are clamped and sometimes they are bolted together. Suggest just buy a cat back. If your car is just a sedan yo can get them for under $200. And it's easier and you'll get better fuel economy and power.

Hi,
Bought the centre assembly from ebay which came quick. But perhaps should just have bought the cat back as suggested since I can't seem to separate the last section from the centre assembly. The section is joined with a pipe clamp (u-bolt clamp) which came off easily, as did the bolts on the flange at the front. It probably has glue or sealant holding it together. Also I don't have much room to move as I just had the car on jack stands, so I can't get any real leverage.

I haven't tried WD40 to see if that works.

I think my options are to take it to a mechanic, or try and angle grind the pipe and put on a new rear piece as well. Although I couldn't get the rear section off either because the rubber hangers are a pain, so that may not be an option.

Any suggestions for the silly situation I have got myself into would be appreciated.

Yep told you its a pain , get a screwdriver between the 2 pipes & bash it in past were the u bolt went in a couple of places as it crushes the pipe a little bit denting them in & also gets corrosion between them, then get a block of wood & a big hammer & bash the hell out of it & wiggle it etc . For the rubber mounts get some silicone spray & liberaly spray around the pin holes this will help them slide off easier

i think they heat them up to help join them. thus why suggested buy a whole new cat back. but such as life.
ive found a slim long flat head screw driver helps get the rubber hangers off as well.

Thanks for the replies. Will probably get a new tailpipe section and cut off the old one. It's not that expensive anyway for a new section. I already have some silicone spray in the garage so that should help with the rubber pieces.

If you are going the high flow cat then go the whole hog and get some extractors as well .
2 1/2 " is the best size to go on a stock rocket :-)

I have noticed that pics of extractors that I have seen don't have the stock heat exhaust shields put back in place is it that there not required anymore or is it they don't fit there after the change out. And if the shields were there as stock and not there after the change out were the stock shields doing anything? or were they there to make the bay look a bit prettier. Just wondering.

Cheers Mark

Gidday David lee and other lads,

What exactly did you get from canterbury exhaust for the $190? 2.5" diameter stainless steel pipes or cheaper motoline brand pipes and mufflers? From the cat back? or included the cat?

My hole is in the top area large centre muffler which sadly is stock welded to the end pipe resonator and no U clamp. I have a Au3 sedan SR auto petrol any helpful suggestions welcomed.

ps I have plugged hole with permatex grey coloured exhaust paste for the time being.

to get the rear tail pipe separated just get a screw driver and hammer it around the out let lifting it , spray some wd40 on it bash a bit more , it will come off , had to do this several times.

If you are after a good value, long life, improved fuel economy and nice deep and distinctive note look at a 2.5" Mercury exhaust and hi flow cat.

Not sure where you get them in Sydney but here in Brisbane was at the local exhaust centre. Got 4 or 5 years out of it before I sold my AU and exhaust was still going strong.
