Reading some of my old Mopar mags and came across photo of this '73 Dodge Charger Rallye (their spelling, not mine). Does the bonnet (hood) bulge look familar? I thought so ..

tough car but the "bulge" has been around for ages

it came about so that for racing they can have more air over the bonnet than under it sucking the car to the ground, if you put the same Bulge on the AU it would have cleaned up in the supercars.they just needed a good reason to have it there as remember the Supercar still runs the windsor. and doesn't need the buldge.

It came from pedestrian saftey and ADRs regarding the distance between the top of the bonnet to the engine actually.

Actually, it came from when an XR8 saw a XR6 with hair dryer!

hmm im pretty sure the only reason it is there was because the head on the 4v's is simply tall.
yes clearence was needed but it was basically because the engine didn't fit. the best things ford ever does seem to come from mistakes. XC Cobra is another example.

overhead cams gave it the bonnet bulge . on a side note what gave a cortina tc 250 one?

Agreed on the TC corty... i always thought they looked similar. The TC bulge came from lack of room between the taller 6cylinder engine and the bonnet; same situation as the Boss engine in the BA's

i'm pretty sure its because a flat bonnet won't fit over the boss engines.

One interesting thing the Mopar bonnet bulge had that I don't think any other "immitators" had was the "air-grabber" .. a trap door on top of the bulge that could be opened to pull fresh air into the carb. Probably not very effective, but very '60s cool!

If you open an XR8 bonnet and look from the side across the guards you'll see exactly why there is a bulge. The actual shape of the bulge is purely for styling as the highest part of it is over where there is no clearance issue.
