Buying car in QLD, driving back to NSW

Here's the deal. I live in Sydney and there are a few cars in QLD that I'm very interested in. This would be the first car I'd be buying with my own money, so I want to make sure I do everything right with rego, insurance and so on.

I've done a bit of research, and made a list of stuff I'd need to do if I was buying one of these cars. Am I missing anything?

1. Have seller cancel QLD rego and remove plates

2. Get a QLD Unregistered Vehicle Permit

3. Take out CTP insurance

4. Pick up car, pay seller, get receipt

5. Drive back to NSW

6. Get a NSW Blue Slip

7. Register car in NSW, get comprehensive insurance

I'm sure some of my fellow New South Welshmen on here have bought cars in QLD and driven them back, so is this the way you did it, or another way?

That's pretty well it!

However, move the "get comprehensive insurance" bit to No.3a. You would best be having
the full insurance in place for the drive home. The policy may be referenced to the VIN
and then updated when you have the full NSW rego details.

I think you will need an unregistered permit for NSW once you cross the border.

The QLD Transport temporary permit will cover the vehicle from the point of purchase
in QLD to the home of the new owner (interstate is OK), over a maximum of 7 days
duration.

ok but you would still need to arrange something in nsw to move from your home to the place for the blueslip i think. (could be better to be safe then sorry) you may also need a new ctp cover as well.

In NSW it is OK to drive unregistered from home directly to the nearest place of
obtaining the blue slip.

I agree that it is probably good to put the NSW green slip in place ASAP once the car is home
and back in NSW. I am not quite sure, but the vehicle may need a valid blue slip so as
the green slip can actually be issued. A call to any CTP insurer would confirm this.

Note however, that the QLD permit includes a 'temporary CTP' cover in the first instance for the actual drive home.

Sounds like you have the basics covered, I cant see any problems with your logic then.

I would suggest getting the car checked by RACQ or mobile mechanic or something in QLD to ensure it is a roadworthy safe vehicle, as that is a requirement of permit I believe.

If they are not providing the below (although its the law)
the vehicle has a Queensland safety certificate or certificate of inspection (COI) and the seller provides you with the blue copy

Agree with that one....
With any luck the seller will already have a current QLD RWC in hand at the
time of sale.

I would ask for receipts to prove the plates have been handed in and cancelled by QLD or you may face issues with transferring in NSW as the systems are somewhat linked now.

Ensure that the seller includes words to the effect of "paid in full" and a signature.
I had issues buying interstate in the past, the RTA would not accept the receipt I provided, due to it not directly stating that I had paid in full. "It could just be an invoice" was their reasoning. Needed a J.P to sign it off in the end.

I bought a car in ACT and drove it on it's current rego to Sydney and drove it here for 3 days before I could get blueslip done and rego transferred.

When i picked the car up, I called NRMA and got comprehensive insurance based on the current plates (no payment required and is valid for 21days).
Came back to Sydney, got the blue slip done and bought CTP (need to be bought in person as RTA requires the actual CTP policy) from the NRMA office and got the rego transferred at the RTA.

RTA needed the receipt to show I've paid for the car (in my name and sellers signature), blue slip, CTP policy that shows it's been paid (cross referenced with the VIN), paid stamp duty ~3% of the purchase price and got new plates and rego.

If you're paying in cash or a bank draft, you can ask the seller to write down a lower price on the sales receipt. This way, you'll end up paying less as stamp duty.

I just did this over the weekend from VIC to NSW.

I would highly recommend doing a PPSR check on the vehicle as I did look at a few cars and they were listed on there, however the banks didn't remove it from the registers - so be wary of that.

I purchased a VIC permit for $41.40 for 1 day unreg driving.
I drove approximately 1018km, went past 3 highway patrols and thought I would be getting an interesting pull over and none of them pulled me over

I bought my Ute in Qld with 6 months Qld rego left on it and drove it to home to NSW (with full comp insurance in my name.)

When the rego ran out here I did the blue slip/rego thing.

Oh, and the QLD plates are still sitting in my garage

Yeah, if it's registered in QLD why purposely de register it?

Just use it's current registration to drive home and then blueslip it back in NSW and away you go.

When you think about it (and I'm sure it's the same in QLD) any buyer has 14 days to transfer the registration into their name, so in your case it will be transferred into your name, but just not in QLD. As far as I recall it never specifies that the 14 days are for QLD residents only and there's nothing that says any interstate buyers must instantly de register the vehicle if they want to take it interstate.

Hand in the QLD plate to the NSW RMS if you like and then you could possibly even claim the remaineder of the QLD rego as a refund (but that might be harder not having it registered in your name in QLD).

If a car is bought from a dealer in qld it must be sold unregistered to an interstate buyer (as unlike NSW the transfer costs are paid for at time of purchase and not at a later date ie the car is sold with rego transferred into new owners name at time of purchase, which cannot be done for interstate buyers as the car cannot be registered in qld to someone who does not live in qld) if buying from a private buyer then I can only assume you could use the existing rego.. I bought my last car from a qld car yard and purchased a unregistered vehicle permit in Qld for the journey home.. then as has been previously stated in NSW you can then drive the car for purposes of registration to have a blue slip and then drive to the RMS to have the car registered. For the OP's info when I organised my trade I made sure that they were aware they were also buying my car unregistered and took the plates back to NSW and cashed in the unused rego/compulsory third party.

ACT unreg vehicle permits are the only ones I know of that don't cover you across the border.

The info about taking the car with the plates and rego
and then cashing in the bit of rego left doesnt work
in QLD to legally buy a car you either buy it unregistered (no plates)
or registered with plates and a current RWC (safety certificate)
then you have to pay the transfer fee based on the current value of the vehicle
there is no in between its one or the other
so if the seller doesnt supply a RWC then he is not allowed by law
to sell it as a registered car (trucks over 4.5 tonne are different )
the only exception to this rule is if the buyer has a motor vehicle dealers licence

I have lived in Australia for 10 yrs now and still can't get my head around the different rules and regulations for registering vehicles, why can't there be one system as in the UK where you buy and register a vehicle and the plate that is issued stays with it no matter where you move to or sell it ?
If i was for example living in Scotland I could travel down to Kent and buy a new /used vehicle get it registered and that's it no need to re register change plates once back home ,also there is no compulsory third party insurance but insurance is compulsory though it is up to the buyer at what level minimum is third party followed by third party fire & theft then comprehensive and also an annual Roadworthy test once a vehicle is 3yrs old also the original registration certificate stays with the vehicle and gets updated only with a change of owner .
