Default roadworthy woes

Gday again, I have a problem, I need to get a roadworthy on my 76 f100. Got put off the road for a bit of rust which Iv cut out & welded sheet replacement, along with 6 coats each of colour & clear & another engine,,,, all which of course took more than the 30 days Vicroads allows you. After that time the only roadtime you can for it is truck or trailer, no permits allowed or given. That also means, by the way,, that legally it can only be "road tested" on private land. How do mechanics road test legally in this situation, or do they just hope the coppers arent just around the corner in the back streets? I'd think a hell of a lot of mechanics around the place break the law regularly just so we can have our wheels rolling,,
Cheers

I don't think a RWC includes a road test.

I think its just a safety check in the shop.

You should be able to get a permit for it. The permit is for people who want to take the cars to and from workshops to get repaired and worked on for a RWC.

Do they not do brake testing in Victoria as part of a RWC?? I am sure there are exemptions for allowing mechanics performing road testing as part of a RWC to drive an unregistered vehicle

I thought that Vic would have had similar laws to here.

An unregistered car can be driven to a place for repair or roadworthy.

in vic if the car is un registered, a permit must be purchased to get it to and from the workshop and to vicroads. Some testers may have a trade plate if a un reg car is towed in, but if no permit or trade plate, then it can't be driven so rwc inspection would be incomplete

You can get an unregistered permit online around $60 for 30 days or u can get 7 or 14 days for less etc. There is some info here https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/regi...ster-a-vehicle

Vic (unlike NSW) you can just buy the permit and drive to the workshop. in NSW you have to do a road worthy report, to get the permit, to get to the workshop

Not true in NSW you are exempt from registration if taking the car to a workshop for the purpose of getting a RWC so you don't need a permit in the first place.

When you can drive unregistered
You can drive an unregistered vehicle in NSW for the purpose of obtaining registration.

You must drive the most direct or convenient route:

To the nearest convenient registry or service centre
To the nearest convenient Authorised Inspection Station to determine whether the vehicle complies with the applicable vehicle standards
In the course of inspecting or testing the vehicle to determine if it complies with the applicable vehicle standards
To the nearest practicable weighbridge to determine the weight of the vehicle
From a registry or service centre, or authorised inspection station, where registration of the vehicle has been refused, to the nearest convenient place where necessary repairs can be made, or where the vehicle can be garaged, unless a direction has been issued that the vehicle must not be driven until repairs have been made
From an Authorised Inspection Station to the nearest convenient place where necessary repairs or adjustments can be made, or where the vehicle can be garaged
To the nearest convenient office of a licensed insurer for the purpose of obtaining CTP insurance
To the nearest convenient location for any other purpose directly associated with the registration process.

To the nearest weigh bridge? How would they police that? Sounds like some crazy loophole.

I do this all the time.

No plates, no rego, just drive to vic roads and get registered.

perfectly legal.

Even insured while doing it.

Are you allowed to drive the car back if it does not pass road worthy inspection?

Yep NSW is easy. My XY GT, did a 150km round trip unregoed, no plates for it's inspection, drove next to 2 cop cars. car is plenty noisy and no issue. I even printed the above info from the RTA and had it on my seat. Car need to be inspected by club registrar and get a pink slip as it was going on club rego, registrar lived an 1.5 hour drive from me.

No loophole at all, not like you can drive your daily drive unregistered to work everyday

From Vicroads website

Unregistered vehicle permits

Unregistered vehicles cannot be driven on the road unless an unregistered vehicle permit has been obtained or the vehicle is exempt from registration.
You can get a Unregistered Vehicle Permit (UVP) when your vehicle is unregistered and/or it is impractical or unreasonable to have the vehicle registered during the period of the permit. A UVP must not be used as a replacement for full registration.
UVPs are intended to cover situations such as:
  • preparing an unregistered vehicle for registration
  • moving a vehicle from place to place on a one-off basis
  • using heavy earthmoving equipment which need to cross or operate on public roads in the course of construction work and cannot meet registration requirements
  • using a rally vehicle on the road
  • using a carnival float on the road.
It is the responsibility of the driver to demonstrate that the journey is covered by the permit.

Buy an unregistered vehicle

You can purchase a car without registration in Victoria. Before you can drive it you must register the vehicle or apply for an unregistered vehicle permit.
An unregistered vehicle is a vehicle that is not registered or its registration has expired by more than 3 months. When sold, unregistered vehicles do not need a Certificate of Roadworthiness.
Step 1: Check the vehicle registration

Before you buy a vehicle, you can check the vehicle registration to confirm it is unregistered, is listed as stolen, written off or has money owning on it.

Step 2: Get proof of purchase from the seller

As the register of vehicles maintained by VicRoads does not provide evidence of title, you should ask the seller for a receipt and keep this as proof of purchase and ownership. The receipt should be dated and included:
Step 3: Get an unregistered vehicle permit from VicRoads

If you need to drive the vehicle while it is unregistered, for example to drive the vehicle home after purchasing it, you must obtain an Unregistered Vehicle Permit.

Step 4: Register the vehicle

If you want to drive the vehicle on the road, you must register your vehicle.

Not a loophole, but to cover yourself you could ring the Weighbridge or repair shop to book in.
