Dynamat/Soundproofing

Anyone here soundproofed their car?

I got a ton of road noise in my GS with the 20" wheels and firm suspension. Considering sound proofing it. Has anyone done this, and is it much of a difference from the stock sound deadening?

There was some sort of discussion in the FG to FGX section but I can't find it at the moment.

I have sound deadened the outer skin of my doors. I noticed an immediate difference to the sound level in the car, however, I have become used to it over time and don't really notice it anymore.

A good side effect of sound deadening the doors is that it does improve the sound system (more than you would think). Another side effect is that your doors feel more solid when you close them. If you have a sub woofer in the rear parcel shelf (which I don't) the sound deadening on the rear parcel shelf also improves the sound system as well.

Agree with PG2.

Immediately noticed BIG difference in my BF ute but 12/18 months down the track thinking it sounds noisy again. Nothing has come off you just get used to it.
MADAYA used both sound deadening and sound ???? I only used sound deadening stuff. Read his various threads/posts.

Yep. Did my car when it was 6 months old.

I didn't use Dynamat, however. Couldn't justify the price.

I used a similar product I bought of ebay.

Took me 8 hours to strip the interior, apply the soundproofing material and refit the interior.

I covered, outer door skins, inner door skins, b pillar, c pillar, parcel shelf top and bottom, whole boot well, bootlid and the whole floor of the car I used some additional traditional sound proof matting.

The only panel I didn't do was the roof under the roof lining. I wish I had now, as the only external noise that I get more of is wind noise from the roof area.

Well worth the effort, not only to decrease external road noise, but to enhance the listening experience if you have upgraded the stereo.

Had my floor, doors, boot and bootlid done in dynamat when I had the new speakers etc. put in. I guess it helps, hard to know without doing a real study back to back, when I got the audio upgrade that was blasting out too much to really study the difference in reduced road noise etc.

I used a Dynamat type product (no brand on it) I got from one of the advertisers on this forum, was less than half the price of Dynamat

I used it on the 38 as the heat that came through the floor was crazy

It cut a lot of the noise down and made quite a difference in the cabin temp

and it was a piece of **** to work with

Oh and to the OP, what tyres are you running? They make a world of difference to road noise.

If you do go ahead and dynomat the car it'd be interesting if you could run a test using an iphone decibel meter or similar. I'm not sure if this would work or show a difference but what you could try is:
- Get a mate to help you, i.e. position phone
- Run the car at a constant speed at a particular location on a coarse chip freeway, i.e. note the reading at a particular way point, eg. a tree or a bridge, or perhaps five different points, and write them down,
- And also try with the phone in different locations, eg. console lid, side of driver's headrest, rear passenger seat
- Then fit the dynomat and repeat
- If you got a 3 dB average drop this would be quite impressive!

I only dynamatted the rear shelf which made the rear of the car much quieter. I think the undeadened shelf acts like a drum. Not doing anything more.
So I suggest to start there.

I have done the doors, parcel shelf, boot well and boot liner.
Definitely made a difference for me.

Still notice noise from the floor, and particularly from behind the dash /firewall and the transmission tunnel. Thinking of doing these next.

I did the back cabin wall of my FG ute, made a big difference to road noise emanating from the rear, worth the effort.

Thanks man. Cheap **** lexani tyres. Thing is on the coarser bitumen it is so load I can't really talk to anyone on the Bluetooth setup.

Madaya (Gaz) even did the hood lining in his ute, and the under bonnet, I can vouch for the quietness of his ride - I've driven it.

He's pretty rectal about his stuff. Not tinny at all like most utes are.
