SALES of SUVs — also known as “faux-wheel-drives” and “soft-roaders” because they’re more suited to sealed roads despite their rugged looks — have overtaken passenger cars for the first time in Australian automotive history.
According to official sales figures in February, 35,497 SUVs were reported as sold versus 34,740 passenger cars.
However, year-to-date, passenger cars remain narrowly ahead of SUVs: just 36 sales apart, 69,660 compared to 69,624.
Our changing taste in vehicles comes as more drivers favour the high driving position and better cargo flexibility of SUVs over traditional sedans and hatches.
The arrival of more “pint-sized” but high-riding hatchbacks — categorised as SUVs — is also behind the surge.

“This one monthly outcome doesn’t signal a landslide but clearly Australian buyers are attracted by the features and capabilities of new generation SUVs, and how these types of vehicles suit their needs and lifestyles,” said the chief executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Tony Weber.
The February figures also revealed the biggest new-car sales slowdown since the Global Financial Crisis.
Sales of all new vehicles were down 7.7 per cent in February: 89,025 deliveries versus 96,443 in the same month last year.
“It’s important to look at sales results in the proper context because February 2016 was an unusually strong month,” said Mr Weber. “It included one extra selling day and saw a lot of activity in the market. This resulted in a 6.7 per cent surge over February 2015.”
Nevertheless, the sudden drop in new-car deliveries means dealers will be more desperate to move metal in the coming months as they clear last year’s stock, sparking further discounts.
Toyota continued to lead the market ahead of Mazda and Hyundai, but Holden had a shocker, down 22 per cent to fifth place and was overtaken by Mitsubishi. The Commodore only just stayed inside the Top 10.

Commodore sales took a hit in February but will bounce back when final editions arrive in showrooms midyear, Holden claim. Holden’s sales and marketing chief Peter Keley said sales were slow because the full Astra line-up was yet to arrive in showrooms and many customers placed forward orders for limited edition Commodores.
“We actually grew our order bank for the Commodore but that’s not reflected in the February figures,” said Mr Keley. “As those cars are built you will see Commodore sales pick up in the coming months.”
Ford posted first decline after 14 months of growth (down 15 per cent), its sales dented after Territory and Falcon reach the end of the line.
Despite the popularity of SUVs, only three are in the Top 10 — the Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson — because the market is so fragmented.

With the article describing these vehicles as SUVs and comparing them differently sales wise to passenger cars, Would the purchasers of these cars (and many other of "these" SUVs), use them any differently to the way they would have used a passenger car?

Also the c-hr is powered by a 1.2LT turbo 4 cylinder petrol motor, Are toyota trying to copy Ford's EcoBoost theory?

Makes sense to keep the commodore name from a business point of view, as its their bread and butter and only name plate with an x-factor to it.

I'm pretty sure about 6 months ago Ford outsold Holden for the month.

I see Mustang continued it's good sales with 577 sold last month. Next best in class was the Toyota 86 with 185!

2017 4X4 SALES: RANGER LEADS IN SOFTENING MARKET

Ford’s Ranger ute has continued to dominate 2017 4X4 sales, building on a solid lead after two months of 2017 work. It’s currently the highest selling 4X4 in Australia, growing a not-insignificant and trend-bucking 13.6% so far compared to last year. So far, they have shifted 4,718 units.

Toyota’s usually dominant HiLux has slid back to an unfamiliar 2nd place, with 4,344 sales set so far. The new LandCruiser ute with traction control, a price bump and a diesel particulate filter, continues to sell in solid numbers as well, with 989 units being shifted so far this year.

Mitsubishi’s Triton rounds out the 4X4 ute podium with a third place, 2,725 units have sold so far, which is down 5.6% over last year. This is indicative across the board, with overall sales slowing slightly compared to the same time last year.

Toyota’s effervescent LandCruiser Prado keeps bumbling along with solid sales, with almost the excact-same figure being sold compared to last year. The 200 Series LandCruiser, on the other hand, is up 21% compared to last year, with 1,657 new units being pushed to buyers. Nissan’s Patrol, on the other hand, continues to lose market share, slumping 11% less compared to an already low figure last year. So far for 2017, only 245 Patrol wagons have been sold.

It’s not all great news for Toyota, however. The mid-sized Fortuner wagon has flagged quite significantly so far this year, with a 51% drop in vehicle sales. Compared to 610 by March last year, they have only moved 295 so far this year. This slack has been taken up by the interestingly-designed and sharply price Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, who has taken up 1,183 sales so far. This is a 61% jump over last year.

Ford’s Everst has slowed 14% in a market that has only grown 1.2% overall, and Jeep’s Grand Cherokee marque continues to plummet, this time going down 58% to 604 units overall. The Wrangler seems to be affected as well, with a 51% drop on sales so far for the year. The list price of the Wrangler has jumped up $500 as well, which no doubt has affected prospective buyers.

Overall, 2017 4X4 SUV sales have shrunk slightly by just under half a percent compared to last year, in a market that has gone down overall by 3.8%. Here is the list of ute sales so far for 2017:
