Default Diesel vs Premium Diesel in modern cars

Tried the search but couldn't find a topic funnily enough.

2 years ago diesel was selling for $1.269pL now that's up to $1.429pL and it doesn't appear to be going down.

My local APCO still sells for the former price though and the service station is actually quite modern and reputable (have friends that fill up there).

Question is, I have always filled up on BP Diesel (Ultimate). Does it really matter in a modern car though? Could I just fill up there every x amount of tanks but go to APCO most of the time?
Does it really matter in a modern diesel?

Can of worms I know but let's get this thread going, haha.

I have tried BP Ultimate Diesel, various Premium Diesel, Truck Diesel and even Costco Diesel. Bugger all difference to fuel economy, and seat of the pants power. If anything there is slightly less soot/smoke using BP Ultimate but thats all.

Europe gets the higher centane diesel for performance diesels.

The biggest bug bear here is water contamination affecting fuel economy.
I have been told that truck diesel tends to be "dirtier" and can gum up injectors.

I've got a 30 micron water/dirt pre-filter and then the factory 5 micron water/dirt filter. If anything gets through it is going to be smaller that the injector nozzle. A little 2 stroke oil very couple of tanks of diesel helps lubricate the injectors too.

Have been using local Apco service station for four years for my PX ranger but use any service station when traveling around Australia using premium & truck diesel etc, my fuel always looks good in the pre-filter view glass and the Ranger has not missed a beat.

Just change the fuel filter every change and check for water contamination.

My Mazda 6 Diesel always performed the same no matter the diesel I put in... Depending on where I was when I needed diesel it had Shell (near Work) 7/11 (Home), BP (Parents Place) or Caltex (near gym). No difference at all to either performance or economy...

As a diesel car driver, this is something that I've given quite a bit of thought to over the years. As such, I've formed the belief that the entire 'premium diesel' vs 'truck diesel' thing is no more than a marketing strategy, designed to pull a few more dollars out of the average diesel powered car owner.

When you think about it, what's a modern long-haul prime-mover worth? Something like a new Volvo FH16 or similar would have to be worth around 400K to buy new I reckon. They are jam packed with technology and are designed to meet emission regulations worldwide. On top of that there's an expectation of covering 1 or 1.2 million kms before needing engine work from what I understand.

Reliability and keeping to schedules is the only way a truck is going to make money so I'd really doubt that the operators would be pumping them full of 'dirty' diesel. It just doesn't stack up when you think about it.

Just my humble opinion and I'm certainly no expert. Just can't help but think that it's all a bit of cow manure. But surely the fuel companies wouldn't try and put one over us would they?

Not sure about oz but in NZ....BP Ultimate is just an additive that is added to standard diesel and they class it as a totally different product different tags on the ground tanks ive asked questions at meetings with BP officials as to how its going and usually get a low key response ?....no factual comparisons appart from so and so courier company has made some small savings?

You do notice when filling with it ,that it must have some anti foaming agent because theres no foam ....bit like flat beer

I wouldnt go out of my way to buy it...havent noticed any economy differences in trucks ?

From what I understand the difference between the two diesels is the premium has more injector cleaner in it.
Once worked with a bloke who would add a cup of super to every tank full in his truck, he swear by it.

I thought that truck diesel just meant it was a high flow pump?
Modern prime movers are pretty advanced bits of machinery. Fuel economy is a major factor when buying a truck so you wild think that it would need decent quality fuel to work properly. Filling it with dirtier diesel doesn't sound like a good idea.

Towing I get better fuel economy on Premium diesel. Up to 50km more a tank.

Around my way there are 4 types of diesel, premium, standard, winter mix and bio diesel mix.
The standard and winter mix I fill at my local rural suppliers where big dollar trucks and massive farm machines share the same fuels.
The third is used vegie oil I mix with my regular diesel, can be anything up to 90% vegie 10% diesel in summer, 50/50 winter.

Performance wise I don't see much difference between them at all apart from the smell of chip with the bio.
Changing filters often is key and don't run empty. !

It's just marketing bollocks, I don't know how the accc haven't dragged to court the fuel supplier that advertises its fuel "busting dirt", what dirt does it bust exactly? Where in my engine is the offending dirt? Has there been a spate of dirty engines grenading of late?
Marketing fuel in this way makes excellent financial sense for the fuel companies, they add a sprinkle of pixie dust to $1 fuel and then charge $1.25 for the same litre lining their pockets and providing little or no benefit to the customer.

sugar will just sink to the bottom of the tank, it would be just like putting sand in your tank
