Hi,
I was driving through Ulladulla on the NSW south coast the other day and noticed at the majority of intersections there were black, vandal proof looking boxes chained to the poles of street signs. A cord ran out of each of these boxes up a pole attached to the street sign and had a small camera mounted on top of the pole. The camera was generally pointed fairly steeply down. Cameras were pretty small, about the size of a fat texta. The angle of them looked like they were looking into cars through the front windscreen. Each intersection had 4 or more of these set up. Anyone know what they are for? My guess is they can detect mobile phone use but I'm not sure. I shoulda got a pic but didn't think to at the time. Thanks! Andrew |

I've noticed these type of cameras here in the western suburbs of melbourne which are mounted on poles prior to road work upgrades, as for their intended use I have no idea!

id say (like ive seen here in WA) they are traffic flow cameras and be gone in a few weeks
they used them on some streets near my work (a heavy truck route) and not the strips across the road in the last check for the road upgrade the main part be no higher than someones reach and i think that was the recording box for the camera , we had bout a dozen along the stretch at the intercessions

Similar sightings in Colac, Victoria in 2016, they are traffic-count cameras: https://colacherald.com.au/2016/03/62442/

I believe they’re for traffic monitoring, I think some are placed to evaluate usage of “rat runs” - saw similar in north-west Sydney a couple of months back.

Being Ulladulla, they probably want to count all the Canberrans currently there.

They could be care packages that Call of Duty players have missed picking up

While we are talking cameras, how about Federal highway right on the border, both northbound and southbound out of the ACT. Each lane is monitored. Any ideas on what they are as there has been zero written that I can find
