2017 Mitsubishi Lancer Black

Apologies for the non-Ford post, but I thought this was a bit weird.

The Mitsi Lancer passed on, quietly, in mid 2017. At which point that platform was 10 years old. As a last hurrah, and I guess to shift the last few, they brought out the "Black Edition."
A rather pointless exercise in which things not black were painted, well, Black.

Fast-Forward to today, and I'm roaming the 2nd hand lot of our local Mitsi dealer, (Looking at Jeeps, obviously) and I came across 5 "new" Lancer Blacks, all 2017 models, with only delivery kms ("10km").
(Asking $19k)

Did somebody stash some, thinking they would become a collectors item??
Did Mitsubishi discover a batch they'd previously misplaced?
Have they been sitting somewhere, forgotten, for 2.5 years??

'Black Edition' …… currently the most over-used words that describe any car with black wheels, grille and with a sticker pack to make it 'exclusive', no matter how mundane it is.

Was just Mitsubishi trying to add some "Freebies" to make the last ones look more attractive to potential buyers... There are many dealers who still have stock with delivery KM's only trying to get rid of them at low prices...

They didn't sell because Mitsi did almost zero upgrades to them.. the last shape came out in 2007 and really didn't change all that much whereas its competitors did... My mum bought one early on (2007 ES Manual) which she had for 10 years, 250,000km's and it was 100% trouble free, reliable and well built..

They aren't exciting, or as up to date as the competitors and no, a Black Edition will never be a good investment but as a cheap, new, first car for someone or a runabout they would be good value...

My understanding is that prior to the production line closing, Mitsubishi Australia order a year or more production volume to stockpile.

Looked at one of these before we bought our i30 last year. Looked great, CVT was an absolute no from me and it was already a year old (but brand new) they wanted $22k at the time. Not a chance I was paying anywhere near that for a 10 year old design on a car that was already a year old. It didn’t present well either.

We bought a new Lancer GSR 2.4 CVT. MID 2016, 12 monthly dealer services and it hasn't made a squeak, surprising good performance, torquey, cvt you don't notice, fuel economy quite reasonable, missus HAPPY, Cheers.

We too bought a new Lancer GSR 2.4 CVT hatch back in mid 2014. When we bought our Escape in mid 2018, the GSR was given to the daughter in return for her 2009 RX Lancer CVT. Both lancers have not missed a beat in all the years of ownership. The 2.4 is a nicer engine than the 2.0 and suits the CVT better. We use the RX as the shopping cart and local driver saving the Escape for longer drives. The GSR certainly put a bit more life into the ageing platform with all its extra features.

Mitsubishi also play the "demo" game harder than most explaining why dealers have plenty sitting around, counted as sold but are actually new.

The Lancer was a good little car. Very well equipped, and still made in Japan. We actually bought one new back in 2016.

Still weird though, to have them sitting around for over 2 years.
It's not like these were EVOs or even the GSR.
It's literally the same car we bought in 2016, with some black bits.

They're a rugged 'modern oldskool' small car - nothing fancy, gets the job done reliably.

I learned to drive in the previous model to these ones with the 2.4L engine and 5sp manual.

These ones would be a sweet first car or commuter if you don't want bells and whistles and it'll live forever in manual guise.

Mind you, they're about the same as a nice Ecoboost Falcon on the second hand market, maybe forget the Lancer as the first car.

The later 2.4 also benefit from having a timing chain so no costly cam belt change. Not sure if same applies to the 2.0 engine. Cheers

They are the same motor just different capacity.

Personally didn’t like them at all and we’re way overpriced. They weren’t even that advanced or amazing when they came out in 2007

"Black edition" means getting rid of the last few left lying around. Holden did it with the Commodore, Kia are doing it currently with the Sorento.
