Tyres Upgrade

poor new ute is running 20" Alterazzo tyres.
Iam heading to a more comfort ride and going back to 17" or 18" also depending what rims I finish up with.
Was thinking of Michelin but the lady boss at Bridgestone (My tyre place for years) offered a good deal on Bridgestone Supercats.

Thoughts. this will be 90% sealed road driving

skinny side tread = skinny boney woman
side walls on tyres gives a little more cuddlesome confidence

But the last set of tyres we put on my wife’s Fiesta were Supercat as the car had odd sized tyres and during covid the Supercat were readily available

They surprised me an ok tyre apparently just a superseded Bridgestone design

If it were me, I would be looking at the 18-inch option in 245/40/R18 sizing, this what Ford developed most of the suspension settings around for the FG.

Personally, I would be looking at -

- Michelin PS4 or PS5 (Don't do the PS4S on this car)

Correct, but the suggested tyre for a 17-inch FG Falcon is the odd sized (and expensive) 245/45/17, which you may as well do 18's for the money.

When my FG was running 17 inch rims I ran Toyo Proxes 235/55/17. With GPS my speedo was running 1 km slow at 60 KPH rising to 2 km at 100 KPH.


Now running 18 inch rims with Khumo Ecxtra? 245/45/18 with speedo reading spot on at 60 KPH and 1 km fast at 100 KPH.

I run khumo pa51s in a 235/45 17 on my bf fairmont ghia. Its not driven like its lap 161 of bathurst. $129 a corner in that size and they do a good job sitting in traffic when its raining which is the majority of the life of my car.

Leaning towards the 18" more mainly as these are 18"


although Ive got the gold King rims at present I am hoping that a blue & bronze appearance will be the end result of 'my' build. Delete all chrome stuff

I dont want offset (different width?) but what size rims and offset (if any) can I go.

AS it will be a case of getting rims & tyres from different places then having the local team fit them.

Throw a set of Michelin’s @ it.Best tyres on the planet! Consistently wins the tyre tests.Good site to visit is ‘Tyre reviews’ (YT) UK guy, very very good.I have been using Michelin since the very early seventies, from the old Michelin X days.Had them all.Biased? Absolutely! Would have put them on my little Fiesta Ecoboost, except they don’t come in that size.Went for the next best thing, Continental Premium contact 2.These are an excellent tyre also.

My FG sedan is on its third set of Bridgestone RE003's I'm getting 50-60k kms out of them with regular pressure checks and rotation. They see a bit of time on unsealed roads, pea gravel and quite abrasive limestone.
Only downside is that they are a little noisy.
IMO not a fan of the Michelins I've used in the past, my experience was that they went off and started to loose performance in the second half of their life. The Bridgestones hang on to the bitter end and get changed due to being worn out not going off.

Only problem I find with the RE003,s is there is less tread on the outside which has grooves that run 90 degrees to the usual tread direction to drain water in the wet (good grip in the wet ) .....if you give it Sh!t around corners they tend to wear the outside edge off

But much better value than Michelin IMO , they're actually a wider tyre than some brands too if you run a tape over them size for size.....Kumho etc

Go & watch ‘Tyre Reviews’(YT). Certainly not ‘better value’ than Michelin,Goodyear Eagle asymmetric 6 is another their brilliant tyre.Goodyear are now manufacturing some brilliant tyres.Continental also.Three of the best tyres around.

Michelin are really expensive over here , I take a lot of these Tyre reviews as just a guide, and would rather trust real world experience but I do agree the Goodyear eagles are a great Tyre, as for Continental not sure about car tyres but I've just taken a set of super single steer tyres that came on a MAN 640 brand new 77k worn out , Goodyear and Bridgestone 120k .....big difference and my own real world experience

I found 100% the opposite. RE003s were my go-to - 4 for the price of 3, could not go wrong. Have gone through 5 sets across 3 cars, I found every set on every car to lose performance very noticeably when they got to about 40% tread left - not just in the wet, but dry too - and very noticeable, not gradual.

I've now gone through a set of Michelin PS4 on my car, literally now on the wear bars, and about to replace them with another set of PS4 but might see what PS5 is like. Wife's car has a set of RE003 with easily 25% tread left, but we're replacing them with PS4 or PS5 because RE003 with 25% tread left is almost like being on the wear bars.

Don't get me wrong, I love the RE003 for that first 60%, and always get a good deal on them too, but the PS4 has same grip/performance as RE003 and in my experience does not 'go-off' like the RE003 do. Granted I have only been through one set of Michelins.

One thing the RE003 has over the PS4 is a harder sidewall, which depending on your tastes is either a pro or a con.

Just replaced worn-out set of Michelin PS4 for a set of PS5...the sidewall looks and feels like felt/velvet.

Not sure what that is about, is kind of weird - wondering if maybe it will make them look like they are 'dressed' for longer, or if it will do the opposite and make them dirty-up faster?

Guess time will tell; only got them yesterday arvo.
